Lower Yuan Festival

Xiayuan Festival, a traditional Chinese festival, falls on the 15th day of the 10th month in the lunar calendar and is also known as "Xiayuan Day" or "Xiayuan".
The origin of the Lower Yuan Festival is related to Taoism. Taoism has three officials: the Heavenly Official, the Earthly Official, and the Water Official. The Heavenly Official bestows blessings with the nine qi of the Upper Yuan Festival, the Earthly Official forgives sins with the seven qi of the Zhong Yuan Festival, and the Water Official relieves disasters with the five qi of the Lower Yuan Festival. The birthdays of the Three Officials are: the 15th day of the first lunar month when the Heavenly Official bestows blessings, the 15th day of the seventh lunar month when the Earthly Official pardons sins, and the 15th day of the tenth lunar month when the Water Official relieves disasters. These three days are known as the "Shangyuan Festival", "Zhongyuan Festival" and "Xiayuan Festival". The Lower Yuan Festival is the day when the Water God relieves people from disasters and the Yanggu Emperor relieves people from misfortunes. It is commonly known as the Lower Yuan Day.

Marriage customs and procedures

1. On the afternoon before the wedding, the groom's family will bring their butler to meet with the bride to discuss the details of the wedding on that day. The bride's sister will go to the groom's house to paste window flowers and collect gift money. 2. On the wedding day, the wedding ceremony is also called "welcoming the bride" or "marrying a daughter-in-law", which is equivalent to the "welcoming the bride" in the "Six Rites". Usually the groom goes to the bride's house to pick up the bride in person. The groom comes to the bride's house early in the morning to marry, and the motorcade must go around the city and cannot go back. 3. After the bride has finished her makeup, she should hold a small mirror to avoid the evil light. While waiting for the wedding, you should eat the prepared cakes and pastries. 4. After the wedding party arrives, the bride's door is often closed and locked by the bride's sisters or girlfriends. On the one hand, it shows the dignity of the woman's family, and on the other hand, it is a deliberate prank on the bride's wedding party. The bride and groom were afraid of missing the wedding date, so they had no choice but to pay the "opening fee" and be done with it. 5. After entering the house, the woman will host a banquet and entertain the man warmly. When entertaining a son-in-law, in addition to all kinds of wine and food, there are also staple foods such as pancakes. The new son-in-law must "steal" a dozen pancakes, a few pairs of chopsticks and some wine vessels. The locals call it "getting wealth." 6. The mother-in-law serves tea to the groom and accepts the wedding money. 7. The brother-in-law exchanges flowers for the bride and groom and receives wedding money. 8. After the groom saw the bride, difficulties arose again. The bride's shoes had been hidden by her family long ago, and the groom needed to find the shoes before he could proceed to the next step. 9. There is a segment for amusing the groom, and the programs are different for each one. 10. After many tests, you can finally marry your bride! However, the bride is not allowed to fall to the ground, and the groom has to carry her all the way home! 11. While the groom is passing many tests, the mother-in-law still has a job - to fumigate the car. (The mother-in-law holds incense in her hand and turns left three times and right three times around the wedding car. Then she opens the car door and fumigates the inside of the car.) After fumigating the car, the mother-in-law receives the wedding money. 12. The bride gets on the car and the motorcade sets off. The wedding procession must carry red cloth or red handkerchiefs. When they meet another wedding procession on the way, both sides must exchange "needle and thread" or throw red handkerchiefs to each other, which is the bride's needlework to ward off disasters. 13. The bride's younger brother accompanies the bride and brings the dowry items, commonly known as "carrying the suitcase". After arriving at the husband's house, the suitcase is opened, commonly known as "opening the suitcase", and red envelopes are collected for carrying the suitcase and opening the suitcase. 14. When arriving at the man's house, the bride is carried to the bed by the groom. The bride sits on the red quilt prepared in advance, and then drinks brown sugar water and eats cakes before she can get out of bed. 15. Invite the groom’s guests and let the newlyweds toast. 16. Before entering the bridal chamber, a woman with both parents and a husband who is still alive must be invited to the new room to arrange bedding for the bride and groom. And spread a handful of five-colored grains under the mattress to bring good luck for a good harvest. Putting a few red dates under the bed means giving birth to a son soon. Putting a few peanuts under the pillow means the boy or girl is "flower" inserted in the "life". 17. At night, relatives and friends make a fuss in the bridal chamber. The more people there are in the bridal chamber, the better; the more people there are, the more dignified and glorious one appears. As the saying goes, "There is no distinction between young and old for a new bride for three days." On this day, everyone, young or old, male or female, can enter the room to "see the new bride" and tease the bride, regardless of whether they are good or bad, with the intention of trying to turn the originally shy girl into a bold and confident bride. 18. Finally, there are people who lurk on the window of the bridal chamber to eavesdrop on the private conversations of the bride and groom, commonly known as "eavesdropping".
