To convert the lunar calendar time into the Heavenly and Earthly Stems and Earthly Branches, it is necessary to consider the leap month, which is determined by the twenty-four solar terms.
The Chinese lunar calendar divides the twenty-four solar terms into twelve solar terms and twelve middle terms. The dates of the 24 solar terms in the lunar calendar are postponed month by month, so in some lunar months, the middle solar term falls at the end of the month, and there is no middle solar term in the next month. Generally, there is a month without a solar term every two years or so, which coincides with the year when a leap month is needed. Therefore, the lunar calendar stipulates that the month without the solar term is a leap month. For example, the 29th day of the fourth lunar month in 2001 was the Grain Full Moon Festival, and the first day of the next month was the Summer Solstice. Since there was no solar term in the middle month, it was designated as a leap month, and it followed April, so it was called the leap April.
Heavenly Stems: Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui.
Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, and Hai.
The Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches are divided into Yin and Yang. Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng and Ren are Yang Stems, while Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin and Gui are Yin Stems; Zi, Yin, Chen, Wu, Shen and Xu are Yang Branches, while Chou, Mao, Si, Wei, You and Hai are Yin Branches. A heavenly stem is paired with an earthly branch and they are arranged with the heavenly stem in front and the earthly branch in the back. The heavenly stems start with Jia and the earthly branches start with Zi. Yang stems are paired with Yang branches, and Yin stems are paired with Yin branches (Yang stems do not match Yin branches, and Yin stems do not match Yang branches). There are a total of sixty combinations, which are called the "Sixty Jiazi".

1. Jiazi 2. Yichou 3. Bingyin 4. Dingmao 5. Wuchen 6. Jisi 7. Gengwu 8. Xinwei
9. Renshen 10. Guiyou 11. Jiaxu 12. Yihai 13. Bingzi 14. Dingchou 15. Wuyin 16. Jimao
17. Gengchen 18. Xinsi 19. Renwu 20. Guiwei 21. Jiashen 22. Yiyou 23. Bingxu 24. Dinghai
25. Wu Zi 26. Ji Chou 27. Geng Yin 28. Xin Mao 29. Ren Chen 30. Gui Si 31. Jia Wu 32. Yi Wei
33. Bingshen 34. Dingyou 35. Wuxu 36. Jihai 37. Gengzi 38. Xinchou 39. Renyin 40. Guimao
41. Jiachen 42. Yisi 43. Bingwu 44. Dingwei 45. Wushen 46. Jiyou 47. Gengxu 48. Xinhai
49. Ren Zi 50. Gui Chou 51. Jia Yin 52. Yi Mao 53. Bing Chen 54. Ding Ji 55. Wu Wu 56. Ji Wei
57. Gengshen 58. Xinyou 59. Renxu 60. Guihai 1. The Ganzhi calendar
For example, Jiazi is the first year, Yichou is the second year, Bingyin is the third year, and so on and so forth. Sixty years makes a cycle. After one week is completed, the cycle begins again from the Jiazi year, and the cycle continues. For example, 1929 was the lunar year of Ji Si, 1930 was the lunar year of Geng Wu... and 1989 was the lunar year of Ji Si again. The years Ji Si and Geng Wu that we see on the calendar are arranged according to the method of the Ganzhi calendar. The remainder of the solar year divided by 60 minus 3 is the lunar calendar number of that year, and then the lunar year number is obtained by looking up the above lunar year number. If the serial number is less than or equal to zero, add 60 to the branch serial number. For example, to find the Chinese zodiac sign for 1991, 1991÷60=33 remainder 11, so the Chinese zodiac sign number for the year = 11-3=8. Looking up the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches table, we know that the year is Xin Wei. For example, to find the Chinese zodiac sign for 1983: 1983÷60=33 remainder 3, the Chinese zodiac sign sequence number = 3-3=0, add 60, and look up the Chinese zodiac sign table to know that the year is Guihai.
2. The Ganzhi calendar
The Ganzhi system of recording months is not widely used and is mainly used by astrologers to calculate horoscopes. The method is: if it is the year of Jia or Ji, the first month is Bing Yin; if it is the year of Yi or Geng, the first month is Wu Yin; if it is Bing or Xin, the first month is Geng Yin; if it is Ding or Ren, the first month is Ren Yin; if it is Wu or Gui, the first month is Jia Yin. Once you know the heavenly stems and earthly branches for the first month, you can infer the heavenly stems and earthly branches for the remaining months according to the sequence of the sixty Jiazi.
3. Ganzhi calendar
Jiazi is the first day, Yichou is the second day, Bingyin is the third day... 60 days make a week. After a week is completed, it starts again from the Jiazi day, and the cycle repeats itself over and over again. For example, in the lunar year of Ji Si (1989), the first day of the first lunar month is Ding You Day, the second day is Wu Xu Day... and it is exactly 60 days until the seventh day of March, so the second day of March is Ding You Day again.
4. Ganzhi timekeeping method
The earthly branches of the hours of the day are also fixed, so the twenty-four hours are matched with the twelve earthly branches. From 11pm to 1am is the Zi hour, and from 1am to 3am is the Chou hour, and the rest are deduced accordingly. The sky at that time is calculated from the corresponding heavenly stem of that day. The rhyme is as follows:
Jia and Ji give birth to Jia, Yi, Geng and Bing are the first.
Bing and Xin start from Wu, Ding, Ren and Geng reside in Zi.
Where will Wu and Gui start? Ren Zi is the true path.
That is, if the day is Jia or Ji, then the Zi hour will be Jiazi; if the day is Yi or Geng, then the Zi hour will be Bingzi; if the day is Bing or Xin, then the Zi hour will be Wuzi; if the day is Ding or Ren, then the Zi hour will be Gengzi; if the day is Wu or Gui, then the Zi hour will be Renzi. Knowing the stem and branch of the hour Zi, you can infer the rest.
