The origin of March 3

1. March 3, Xuanyuan is born
The origin of March 3rd is closely related to the birthday of Emperor Huangdi. There has always been a saying among the Chinese people that "On the second day of the second month, the dragon raises its head; on the third day of the third month, Xuanyuan is born." According to legend, Huangdi was born in Xuanyuan Hill, so he was called Xuanyuan. Huangdi and Yandi are collectively known as the ancestors of the Chinese nation. Xinzheng, Henan Province is the place where Huangdi was born. Every year on March 3rd, a ceremony to worship the ancestors in Huangdi's hometown is held in Xinzheng, Henan Province.
2. The formation of Shangsi Festival
It is said that the Si Festival originated from the witchcraft activity of using orchid soup to ward off evil spirits. Orchids were used as spiritual objects and had the characteristic of having a charming fragrance. The ancients had to fast before holding major sacrificial ceremonies, which included the best bathing method at the time, "orchid bathing." Zheng Xuan's note on "The Book of Zhou" reads: "The annual purification ceremony is now the Shangsi Festival in March, such as the water festival." After the Wei and Jin Dynasties, the Shangsi Festival was changed to the third day of the third month in the lunar calendar, so it is also called "Double Third" or "March 3rd".
3. Primitive beliefs
There is also a view that the Shangsi Festival originated from the fertility worship activities of our ancestors. As Tao Siyan pointed out, the purification activities were originally religious behaviors for men and women to enjoy each other in spring and for women to pray for pregnancy, while bathing with orchids or aromatic herbs can arouse desire. Water is a mysterious life-giving substance. When a woman goes to the river, she not only wants to wash off the winter dust, but also hopes to get pregnant by touching the water and have a child. This belief in blessing reproduction near water, which is related to primitive religion, should be the real reason for the custom of purification ceremony on the Shangsi Day in March.
