When is the Beginning of Summer?

The Beginning of Summer marks the farewell to spring and the beginning of summer. Spring brings growth, summer brings growth, autumn brings harvest, and winter brings storage. When it comes to the Beginning of Summer, all things flourish. Due to my country's vast territory and large north-south span, the natural rhythms vary from place to place.
During the Beginning of Summer season, only the areas south of the line from Fuzhou to Nanling in my country enter the true summer with "dense green trees and long summer days, and reflections of buildings in ponds"; while parts of the Northeast and Northwest have just begun to feel the breath of spring. According to the classification standards of modern climatology in my country (seasonal average temperature), summer begins when the daily average temperature stably rises to above 22℃.
Customs of Beginning of Summer
1. Beginning of Summer Eggs

Although the traditional food customs on the day of Beginning of Summer vary across the country, the most classic food on the day of Beginning of Summer is the "Beginning of Summer Egg". The day before the beginning of summer, many people start cooking "beginning of summer eggs" at home. They usually use tea leaves or walnut shells to cook them. Watching the eggshells slowly turn red, the house is filled with fragrance. Tea eggs should be eaten while hot. Pour good wine over them and sprinkle some fine salt on them. The aroma of wine and tea makes them fragrant and tasty.
2. Cooking the summer
During the Beginning of Summer, it is a popular custom in Fuzhou to cook "summer food". Dingbianhu (also known as Guobianhu) is made by cooking rice paste in a hot pot and served with dried shrimp, shrimp oil, green onions, golden needles, black fungus, clams, or a small amount of shiitake mushrooms, dried clams and other seafood soup. It tastes extremely delicious. Anyone who grew up in Fuzhou or lived in Fuzhou for a long time loves to eat it. It has become a famous snack in Fuzhou and a special symbol of Fuzhou. For Fuzhou people who have left their hometown and live abroad, when they hear the three words "Dingbianhu" in a foreign country, it is as if they have seen the "silver shadow" of their hometown. It has become a local snack that represents their love for their homeland. The custom of cooking in the hot summer was popular in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. The beginning of summer has entered the busy farming season. On the day when Dingbian is cooked, not only does the family eat well and then go to work in the fields, but they also give the food to neighbors to enjoy together. Just like shabu-shabu, “it’s cooked in one stroke”, it is used to strengthen the relationship. It embodies the traditional virtue of Fuzhou people that "the countryside is rich in gold and the people there live in silver".
3. Weighing people
An ancient poem goes like this: "On the Beginning of Summer, people are weighed to count their weight; the scales are hung on the beams and people laugh and make noises in the boudoirs." The custom of "weighing people" on the Beginning of Summer is mainly popular in southern my country and originated in the Three Kingdoms period: Legend has it that after Liu Bei's death, Zhuge Liang handed his son Adou over to Zhao Zilong to send him to Jiangdong, and asked his stepmother, Mrs. Sun from the State of Wu, who had returned to her mother's family, to raise him.
It was the beginning of summer that day. Lady Sun weighed A Dou in front of Zhao Zilong. She was to weigh him again at the beginning of summer the following year to see how much weight he had gained. She would then write a letter to report to Zhuge Liang, and thus a custom was formed and spread among the people. It is said that after weighing yourself on this day, you will not be afraid of the summer heat and will not lose weight, otherwise you will be plagued by diseases. After eating the Beginning of Summer meal, a large scale is hung on the beam. Adults hold the scale hook with both hands and suspend their feet in the air to weigh their weight; children sit in a basket or on a stool with four legs facing up, hanging on the scale hook to weigh their weight. It is said that weighing yourself at the Beginning of Summer can prevent summer heatstroke. If you gain weight, it is called "gaining weight" and if you lose weight, it is called "losing fat".
