China first publicly and officially celebrated International Women's Day in Guangzhou in March 1924, which was the honeymoon period of the first cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party. Since the Chinese first celebrated International Women's Day in 1924, the festival has become an important venue for the Kuomintang and the Communist Party to lead the Chinese women's movement. International Women’s Day represents the revolutionary tradition and serves as a special public cultural space for China’s century-old women’s movement. The United Nations has celebrated International Women's Day since 1975, International Women's Year, recognizing the tradition of ordinary women striving for equal participation in society. In 1997, the General Assembly adopted a resolution inviting each country to select a day of the year to be declared the United Nations Day for Women's Rights and World Peace in accordance with its own historical and national traditions and customs. United Nations initiatives have led to the establishment of a national legal framework for achieving equality between women and men and have increased public awareness of the urgent need to improve the status of women in all areas.
