Introduction to Nine Days:

The Nine-Nine Days, also known as the Winter Nine-Nine Days, is a folk method used by the Chinese to calculate the dates of cold days and spring flowers. Generally, it is coldest during the 39th and 49th days of winter, which is the coldest time of the year. When you count to nine "nines" (ninety-nine eighty-one days), spring has arrived, the days are warm, all things are full of vitality, and it is time for spring ploughing.
The method of counting the nine days has been passed down orally among the Chinese people. It has a history but lacks records. As for when it originated, there is no definite information. In traditional culture, nine is the extreme number, the number of "extreme yang", and the largest number. The accumulation of "extreme yang" means the gradual reduction of yin energy, and when it accumulates to nine times, it reaches the end, meaning the cold is gone and warmth is coming, and "spring is deep".

How to calculate the nines:

The method of counting the nine days to calculate the cold and warm is applicable to areas in my country where the changes in cold and warm are obvious before and after the winter solstice. The calculation of the changes in cold and warm is accurate to the number of days, starting from the day of the winter solstice. The coldest periods are during the "39th and 49th days", and when counting to the "99th and 81st days" it is spring and the days are warm. In some places, the count of the nine days starts from the day of the winter solstice. In some cold areas, it is covered with ice and snow, and the temperature is below zero degrees Celsius for a long period of time in winter and spring. The change between cold and warm before and after the winter solstice is not obvious, and there is not much difference between a few days earlier or later and a few degrees Celsius higher or lower in temperature. For the convenience of counting the nine days, it is counted from the winter solstice, that is, the day of the winter solstice is called "Jiaojiu", and every nine days is "Yijiu", and so on.
