What is Xiaonian?

Xiaonian is a traditional festival of the Han nationality in China, also known as Xie Zao, Zao Wang Festival, and Zao Wang Festival. Xiaonian also means that people begin to prepare New Year's goods and get ready to have a good new year in a clean way. It means that the new year should have a new look, and expresses the Chinese working people's beautiful wish to bid farewell to the old and usher in the new, and to welcome good luck and fortune.
As the saying goes, "On the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month, the Kitchen God goes to heaven." In folk tradition, gods are especially worshipped during the New Year. According to legend, the Kitchen God has been staying at home since New Year's Eve of the previous year to protect and monitor the family. On the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month, he will go to heaven to report the good and bad deeds of the family to the Jade Emperor, so as to urge people to exercise self-discipline in their daily behavior.
When offering sacrifices to the Kitchen God, people place various offerings in front of the stove, the most prominent of which is "sugar". Therefore, there is a saying that "On the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, sugar melon is served", which means that the Kitchen God will say more sweet words after eating it. Just like the couplet next to the Kitchen God, "Say good things to the gods in heaven and keep the world safe", in fact, "sugar melon" is the first signal of the Chinese New Year. It will be prepared during the Chinese New Year, and it also expresses people's good wishes for good luck and fortune in the Chinese New Year.

Is it the same day everywhere?

Little New Year: It falls on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month in most parts of the north and on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month in most parts of the south.
Regarding the Little New Year, there was a saying in ancient times that "officials celebrate the Little New Year on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, while ordinary people celebrate it on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. Among them, boatmen who make a living on the water postpone their celebration to the 25th day of the twelfth lunar month. This is because the north has been the political center of China for a long period of time in history. Influenced by the official atmosphere, people generally celebrate the Little New Year on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. The southern region is far away from the political center, so people regard the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month as the Little New Year. Residents living along lakes and seas have long maintained the tradition of celebrating the Little New Year on the 25th day of the twelfth lunar month.
It is said that officials and civilians no longer celebrated the Little New Year on the same day starting from the Qing Dynasty. Starting from the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty, gods would be worshipped in the Kunning Palace on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month every year. The emperor was quite frugal, so in order to save money, he also worshipped the Kitchen God. Later, the royal family and nobles also followed suit and worshipped the Kitchen God on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. As a result, the custom of celebrating the Little New Year on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month became popular among the people, and there was also a distinction between officials and civilians celebrating the Little New Year on different days.
