What is Laba Festival and what does it mean?

Laba Festival is one of the grand festivals in Buddhism. According to Buddhist records, before Sakyamuni attained enlightenment, he practiced asceticism for many years until he became emaciated. He then realized that asceticism was not the ultimate way to liberation, and decided to give it up.
At this time, he met a shepherdess who presented him with gruel. After eating it, his strength was restored. He sat under the Bodhi tree and meditated. On December 8th, he achieved enlightenment.

To commemorate this event, Buddhists hold a ceremony on this day and cook porridge with rice and fruits to offer to the Buddha. It is recorded in "Dreams of the Southern Song Dynasty" by Wu Zimu of the Southern Song Dynasty: "The eighth day of this month is called Laba in temples. Large temples all prepare porridge with five flavors, which is called Laba porridge." Since Buddhism was introduced to China, temples have made porridge with fragrant grains and fruits and presented it to disciples and believers.
On the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month, various temples hold ceremonies, imitating the story of the shepherdess offering gruel to the Buddha before his enlightenment. They use fragrant grains and fruits to cook porridge as an offering to the Buddha, which is called Laba porridge. It is said that after drinking this kind of porridge, one can get the blessing of Buddha. Therefore, Laba porridge is also called "Longevity and Fortune Porridge", "Blessed Virtue Porridge", and "Buddha Porridge".
"Laba" was originally a Buddhist festival, but after generations of evolution, it gradually became a household folk festival.
——Laba Festival was originally a Buddhist festival, a festival to commemorate the enlightenment of Sakyamuni Buddha (the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month). Later, it evolved into a typical folk festival in the northern region. About the beam raising of the house - "throwing the beam" after raising the beam
Afterwards, the craftsmen will wrap the fruits, food, etc. in red cloth, and throw the cloth bags into the basket held up by the host with both hands while saying nice words. This procedure is called "receiving the bag", which means catching the treasure.
The most lively procedure of the beam-raising ceremony is "throwing the beam". When the host "takes the bag", the craftsman will throw candies, peanuts, steamed buns, copper coins, "gold ingots" and so on from the beam to the surroundings, letting the men, women, old and young who come to watch the fun scramble for them. The more people come, the happier the host is. This act is called "throwing the beam", which means "money rolling in."
When "throwing the beam", craftsmen have to say auspicious words. They often say: "Throw the beam to the east, the sun rises in the east and the house is full of red; throw the beam to the west, the unicorn will deliver a child and it will be a double happiness; throw the beam to the south, the descendants will become top scholars for generations; throw the beam to the north, the store of rice will be full every year."
After the beams are thrown, everyone moves out of the new house and lets the sun dry the beams, which is called "drying the beams".
Finally, the host holds a banquet to entertain the craftsmen, helpers, relatives and friends, and distributes red envelopes, and the entire beam-raising ceremony is concluded.
