When is the Great Cold? What are the climate characteristics?
There are twenty-four solar terms in a year. It is said that Minor Cold and Major Cold are the coldest times of the year. After Minor Cold, the last solar term, Major Cold, arrives. So when is Major Cold? What are the climate characteristics?

When is the Great Cold?

Dahan is the last solar term among the 24 solar terms in a year. "After the Great Cold, a new year begins (in the lunar calendar)." After the Great Cold, it is the Beginning of Spring, and the cycle of the solar terms for a new year begins. As the saying goes, winter goes and spring comes, and we can faintly feel the signs of the earth's rejuvenating spring. Like Lesser Cold, Greater Cold is also a solar term that indicates the degree of coldness of the weather. Dahan means the weather is extremely cold. "The Lesser Cold and the Greater Cold freeze everything into a ball." "Collected Explanations of the Seventy-two Seasons of the Lunar Calendar": "In the middle of December, the explanation is as above (Lesser Cold)." "General Examination of Time and Time·Heavenly Time" quotes "Three Rituals and Meanings": "The Greater Cold is the middle one, and it is above the Lesser Cold, so it is called the Greater Cold... The cold air is at its extreme, so it is called the Greater Cold."
In rural areas, the older generation still attaches great importance to the traditional 24 solar terms, because in the past farmers basically used the 24 solar terms as time points for their agricultural work. Even though many people in rural areas no longer farm or are unable to farm, they still care about the 24 solar terms, because the 24 solar terms are not only related to farming, but also have a good predictive effect on future weather.
Some people may wonder, since the Great Cold falls in January every year, how can it be the last of the 24 solar terms? This is because the 24 solar terms are designated according to the lunar calendar, which usually falls around January 20th in the solar calendar.

What are the climate characteristics?

During the Great Cold season, the weather is characterized by strong winds and low temperatures, and the snow on the ground does not melt for many days, presenting a severe cold scene of ice and snow. Shao Yong, a famous Neo-Confucianist and poet in the Northern Song Dynasty, wrote in his poem "Song of the Great Cold" that "the old snow has not yet melted, and the new snow is piled up against the door. The steps are frozen into a silver bed, and the eaves are covered with ice stalactites. The clear sun has no brilliance, and the strong wind is howling. Everyone has a tongue, but they cannot utter a word."
It means that the weather is extremely cold. Because cold waves continue to move south during this period, the Great Cold solar term is the coldest period of the year in most parts of the country. Its climate characteristics are strong winds and heavy snow. The snow on the ground is not easy to melt, and the scene is covered with ice and snow everywhere. In ancient times, there were also three signs during the Great Cold solar term, namely "the first sign is that hens lay chicks; the second sign is that migratory birds fly fast; the third sign is that the bellies of eagles in marshes become hard." This means that when the Great Cold solar term arrives, hens can hatch chicks again, and eagles have the strongest hunting ability at this time, and they often circle in the air looking for food. During the last five days of the year, the ice on the river is the hardest and strongest. However, after the Great Cold comes the Beginning of Spring, which also means the cycle of solar terms for the next year begins.

Ancient poems about the Great Cold

Song of the Great Cold (Shao Yong, Song Dynasty)
The old snow has not yet melted, and new snow is already covering the doors. There is a frozen silver bed in front of the steps and ice stalactites on the eaves.
The clear sun has no brilliance, and the strong wind is howling. Everyone has his own tongue, but they cannot utter words.
Great Cold (Left River Water)
The wax trees and silver mountains shine brightly, while the north wind howls alone and quiets the three rivers.
The old farmer is still happy to see snow in the sky, not to mention the fragrance of wheat and fruits next year.
