Offerings to the Kitchen God: Kitchen God Fruit
Sending off the Kitchen God is usually held at dusk. The family first goes to the kitchen, sets the table, burns incense to the Kitchen God in the shrine on the stove wall, and offers sacrificial fruits. The fruits for offering sacrifice to the Kitchen God include red balls, white balls, sesame balls, oil fruits, Cunjin candy, foot bone candy, white cross-cut, black cross-cut, etc., either in 8 colors or 12 colors, and they are all sweet and sticky when eaten.
After the offering, the statue of "Jiu Tian Dong Chu Siming Zaojun" that has been pasted for a year will be burned together with the paper horse, and people will pray that he will do more good things in front of the Jade Emperor and bless the family with peace. The sacrificial fruit will be shared by family members, mainly children, and "after eating the sacrificial fruit, the feet bones will be healthy."
Offerings to the Kitchen God: Kitchen God soup, Kitchen God candy
On the night of the Kitchen God Festival, every household in Henan makes "Kitchen God Soup" with tofu, vermicelli, cabbage, kelp, etc., and offers sesame cakes made of sugar paste or malt syrup, which is "Kitchen God Sugar", in front of the Kitchen God's tablet. The ancients said: "The Kitchen God returns to heaven on the dark day to report his sins. During the sacrifice, stick sugar cakes into his mouth to prevent him from speaking."
At the same time, eighteen fire cakes are baked, and a rooster is clamped by its wings and placed in front of the Kitchen God, with some grass and beans placed aside to "feed the god". The main priest first sprinkles wine on the cock's comb, lights incense and candles in front of the altar, sets off firecrackers, and recites prayers with a variety of contents, all of which are words of help and blessings. Take down the Kitchen God statue from the wall, smear its mouth lightly with kitchen sugar, burn it on a paper horse, shout "Send the Kitchen God on horseback to heaven", and the sacrifice is over.
Offerings to the Kitchen God during the Tang and Song Dynasties
Song Dynasty poet Fan Chengda's "Sacrifice to the Kitchen God" gave a very vivid description of the folk worship of the Kitchen God at that time: "According to ancient legend, on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, the Kitchen God looks up to the sky to speak. The cloud chariot and wind horse linger for a while, and every family has cups and plates for the rich offering. The pig's head is well-cooked, the two fish are fresh, and the bait is round with red bean paste, sweet pine and rice. Men offer wine and women avoid it. Pour wine and burn money to please the Kitchen God. Don't listen to the maids' quarrels, and don't be angry at the cats and dogs for getting dirty. I will send you drunk and full to the gate of heaven. Don't say whether the spoon is long or short. I will ask for the profit and share it when I return."

The Origin and Evolution of the Kitchen God Sacrifice

According to the local customs and features book Fengtu Ji written by Zhou Chu, a famous person in Jin Dynasty, “On the night of the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month, people worship the Kitchen God. Fan Chengda of the Song Dynasty said in his "Poems for Offering Sacrifice to the Kitchen God": "According to ancient legend, on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month
, the Kitchen God looks up to the sky to speak. The cloud chariot and wind horse linger for a while, and every family has cups and plates for offering sacrifices. In the early and middle Qing Dynasty, the Kitchen God worship was always held on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month. "A Grand View of Qing Dynasty Unofficial History: Remaining Stories of Qing Palaces" says that during the Qianlong period, the Kitchen God was worshipped in the Kunning Palace on the twenty-fourth night of the twelfth lunar month every year.
Starting from the middle and late Qing Dynasty, the imperial family held a ceremony to worship the heaven on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month . In order to "save money", they also worshipped the Kitchen God. Therefore, most northern regions celebrate the Little New Year on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month. In most parts of the south, the ancient tradition of celebrating the Little New Year on the 24th day of the twelfth lunar month is still maintained.
