The order of funeral procession

The funeral procession is also called "coming out of the mountain". Before the funeral, a fortune teller must be asked to choose an auspicious day and time, which is called "opening the disaster list". Before the funeral, the spirit must be said goodbye to. First, put the food from the last memorial ceremony into a porcelain jar. During the funeral, the eldest daughter-in-law will hold the jar and finally bury it in front of the coffin. The next step is to "sweep the materials", which means lifting the head of the coffin, and the filial son puts some copper coins under the coffin. He then uses a new broom and dustpan to sweep the loose dust on the coffin lid and pour it under the kang mat, which means "bringing wealth to get a job".
The procedure for the funeral is as follows: first turn the coffin and move it outside the door, then lift the head of the coffin and prepare the mouth for sacrifice. The ritual is presided over by a ritualist, and the host kneels down. After the ritualist finishes reading the sacrificial text, the monks and Taoists lead the filial sons and daughters to "rotate the coffin". After circling the coffin three times, the coffin is tied up with ropes and the lid is closed.
When the coffin is about to set off, the funeral procession must also be ready. Generally, the eldest son leads the way with the banner, the second son holds the spirit tablet, the filial relatives below the second son hold "mourning sticks" wrapped in white paper, and the eldest daughter-in-law holds the "stuffing jar". After preparations are complete, the coffin can be lifted. Along with this, there are two rituals: one is to take apart the pillow used by the deceased during his lifetime and burn the buckwheat husks and other items inside together with the pillowcase; the other ritual is "breaking tiles", which involves breaking into pieces the clay basin used for burning paper in front of the coffin.
This basin is called "Yin Yang Basin" and is commonly known as "Funeral Basin", but it is also called "Auspicious Basin". This ceremony is very important. The person who breaks the pot is usually the eldest son or grandson of the deceased, a very close relative. If there are no sons or grandsons, and someone else has to break the pot, this ceremony will make the person who breaks the pot closer to the deceased, and even establish a property inheritance relationship. When smashing a basin, it is important to break it into pieces at once, and the more broken pieces the better, because according to custom, the basin is the deceased's pot, and the more broken pieces it is, the easier it will be for the deceased to carry.
The clay basin was thrown down, the pallbearers lifted the bier and the funeral procession officially began. A funeral procession followed. The order of funeral procession is usually as follows: grass dragon -- memorial flag -- filial lantern -- auspicious lantern -- cage for releasing animals -- memorial banner -- incense pavilion -- statue pavilion -- soul sedan -- paper bridge -- orchestra -- coffin -- surviving family members -- monks and Taoist priests -- golden boys and jade girls -- funeral relatives and friends. Of course, customs vary from place to place, and the processions and forms of funerals also vary. The ceremonies of wealthy families are grand and elaborate, with complete funerary objects, while funerals of poor families may be much simpler and less elaborate.
There are several etiquettes during the traditional funeral procession. Such as throwing paper money, setting up tea tables and offering sacrifices on the roadside. Throwing paper money refers to scattering paper money made of white paper and shaped like copper coins. It is usually done by a special person in front of the filial son. After the coffin is lifted, paper money is scattered when there are roadside sacrifices, when passing crossroads, riversides, bridges, temples, city gates, and when the body is buried.
Tea tables and roadside memorial tents are mostly set up by the bereaved family’s relatives and friends to express their condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family. The tea table is for filial sons and their relatives and friends to drink water, and the filial sons should run down and kowtow to express their gratitude. Roadside sacrifice refers to setting up an offering table or sacrificial shed on the road that the funeral procession passes by to commemorate the deceased. When there is a roadside sacrifice, the funeral procession usually stops the coffin to hold the sacrifice and express gratitude. After the sacrifice, the coffin is lifted and the procession continues on its way.
