How did the National Day come about?

National Day was not originally a “national” day
The term "National Day" originally referred to national festivals and was first seen in the Western Jin Dynasty. Lu Ji, a writer of the Western Jin Dynasty, once recorded in his article "On the Five Ranks of Princes" that "National Day is the only one that enjoys its benefits, while the monarch worries about its harm." In my country's feudal era, the most important national celebrations were the emperor's enthronement, birthday (the Qing Dynasty called the emperor's birthday the Wansui Festival), etc. Therefore, in ancient my country, the emperor’s accession to the throne and birthday were called "National Day". Today the anniversary of the founding of a country is called National Day.
From the founding ceremony to the National Day
On October 1, 1949, the founding ceremony of the Central People's Government of the People's Republic of China, also known as the founding ceremony, was held grandly in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, and the People's Republic of China was born!
On October 9, 1949, the First National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held its first meeting. The members requested that the association discuss and decide to designate October 1 as National Day.
On December 3, 1949, the Fourth Session of the Central People's Government Council accepted the suggestion of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and passed the "Resolution on the National Day of the People's Republic of China", deciding that October 1 of each year would be the great day when the People's Republic of China was founded and the National Day of the People's Republic of China.

The Origins of National Days in Various Countries

National Day is a legal holiday established by a country to commemorate the country itself.
They are usually the country's independence, the signing of the constitution, the head of state's birthday or other significant anniversaries; some are also the saint's day of the country's patron saint.
Although most countries have similar commemorative days, due to complex political relations, this holiday in some countries cannot be called National Day. For example, the United States only has Independence Day and no National Day, but the two have the same meaning.
In ancient China, the emperor’s accession to the throne and birthday were called "National Day".
The basis for determining National Day in different countries around the world varies greatly. According to statistics, there are 35 countries in the world that celebrate the year of their founding as their National Day. Countries like Cuba and Cambodia celebrate the day their capitals were occupied as their National Day. Some countries celebrate Independence Day as their National Day.
On January 1, 1804, the Haitian people annihilated Napoleon's 60,000 expeditionary forces and declared independence in Port-au-Prince. Since then, January 1 of each year has been designated as National Day. The same is true for countries such as Mexico and Ghana. Some countries also celebrate the anniversary of an armed uprising as their national day. July 14th is France's National Day.
On this day in 1789, the people of Paris captured the Bastille, a symbol of feudal rule, and overthrew the monarchy. Some other countries celebrate major conference days as their National Day.
The United States celebrates July 4, 1776, the day the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, as Independence Day.
Canada celebrates its National Day on July 1, 1867, the day the British Parliament passed the British North America Act. There are also countries that celebrate the birthday of the head of state as their National Day, such as Nepal, Thailand, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium and other countries.
National Day is an important holiday in every country, but the names are different. Many countries call it "National Day" or "National Day", some countries call it "Independence Day" or "Independence Day", some call it "Republic Day", "Republic Day", "Revolution Day", "Liberation Day", "National Renaissance Day", "Constitution Day", etc. There are also those that simply add "day" to the country name, such as "Australia Day" and "Pakistan Day". Some take the king's birthday or accession day as the National Day. If the king changes, the specific date of the National Day will also change accordingly.

What holiday is the day before National Day in 2020?

September 30, 2020 is Martyrs' Day.
At the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference held from September 21 to 30, 1949, Zhou Enlai proposed that "a monument to the people's heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country be built in Tiananmen Square", and this opinion was unanimously agreed by the delegates. After the closing ceremony of the meeting on September 30, all representatives held a foundation laying ceremony for the Monument to the People's Heroes outside Tiananmen Square. On behalf of the presidium, Zhou Enlai delivered a speech, saying: "We, the First Plenary Session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, call on the people to commemorate the dead and encourage the living. We have decided to build a monument to the people's heroes who sacrificed their lives for the country in the capital of the People's Republic of China." All representatives took off their hats and observed a moment of silence. After reading the inscription, Mao Zedong personally took a shovel and shoveled the soil to show his respect for the martyrs. The inscription was written by Mao Zedong and handwritten by Zhou Enlai. The inscription on the monument reads: "Over the past three years, the people's heroes who sacrificed in the People's Liberation War and the People's Revolution will be immortal! Over the past thirty years, the people's heroes who sacrificed in the People's Liberation War and the People's Revolution will be immortal! From this, going back to 1840, since then, in order to oppose internal and external enemies, fight for national independence and the freedom and happiness of the people, the people's heroes who sacrificed in various struggles will be immortal!" The construction of the Monument to the People's Heroes began in 1952 and was officially completed in 1958. The eight large gold-plated characters "The People's Heroes Will Live Forever" on the monument were written by Mao Zedong. Erecting a monument for the people's heroes is to remember the heroes and pass on and carry forward their spirit from generation to generation. This is why September 30th was established as National Martyrs' Day.
In addition, designating September 30 as Martyrs' Day, which is connected with National Day on October 1, has also given new connotations to National Day. The Martyrs' Day and National Day are both different and integrated, making the ceremonies during the National Day relaxed and orderly, reflecting the sentiment of "one should not forget the well diggers when drinking water" and not forgetting to pay tribute to the martyrs on National Day. It makes the significance of National Day more profound and the celebrations of National Day more solemn and full of emotion.
