What should we eat during the Ghost Festival?

What to eat during the Ghost Festival: Duck
On the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, the Ghost Festival, people in many parts of the country choose to eat duck.
It turns out that "鸭" means "压", which is a homonym for "鸭". Eating duck is to suppress ghosts. Moreover, chicken claws are shaped like rakes, which can easily scratch the ghost's clothes off (perhaps because they are afraid of accumulating resentment and refusing to return to the original place), so it makes sense to choose ducks with flat feet. People in Dongguan usually eat lotus root stewed with duck.
The reason for eating duck on the Ghost Festival is that according to legend, deceased ancestors will return home to visit their relatives on this day and have to cross the Naihe Bridge, but they cannot do so without a boat.
Therefore, the living people would send some ducks down so that the ducks could swim and carry them back. Over time, this became a tradition of eating ducks during the Ghost Festival.
What to eat during the Ghost Festival: Eat flatbread
In Dongxian Township, Jiangsu Province, many villagers eat flatbread (a dustpan-shaped food made of flour and sugar) on the day of the Ghost Festival. Nowadays, some people call flatbreads dumplings, but in fact, flatbreads and dumplings are very different.
The difference between flatbread and dumplings lies first in the skin and second in the filling.
In terms of the skin, the dumpling skin is thicker, while the flatbread skin is as thin as a cicada's wing and crystal clear. The dumplings have little filling, so small that they are only the size of a thumb, so the size of the dumplings is also relatively small. Although there are more than ten dumplings in a bowl, they only take up one-third of the bowl, and the rest is soup. In addition, the filling of the dumplings is relatively simple, mostly pork with some vegetables and seasonings.
However, dumplings are quite different. Not only meat and vegetables can be used as stuffing, but also chicken, duck, fish, crab, Sanzi, tender soybeans, etc. The stuffing is also particularly particular about the combination, such as chicken breast with celery, pork with shepherd's purse, eggs with leeks, etc.
What to eat during the Ghost Festival: Rice noodles
On the Ghost Festival, there is a custom of eating rice noodles in Dongguan, and it is common in almost the entire Dongguan.
Of course, the way of eating rice noodles is different in different areas. Rice noodle is a traditional food at Dongguan’s birthday banquet, symbolizing longevity, good fortune and longevity.
Dongguan is most famous for its roast goose. The most important thing about roast goose soup is a pot of delicious broth, which must be made with a whole chicken, large pieces of meat, large pieces of bones, and many special medicinal herbs and spices.
When eating, blanch the rice noodles in hot water and put them in a bowl, then add a large spoonful of broth, and then cover the noodles with a layer of crispy skin and tender meat of roast goose.
What to eat during the Ghost Festival: Flower buns
Before the 15th day of the seventh lunar month, dough sculpture activities are popular among women, especially in northern Shanxi. A family steamed flower buns, and the neighbors came to help. First, according to the actual number of people in the family, make a big flower bun for each person.
The flower buns given to younger generations should be pinched into a flat shape, called a "mianyang", which means a lamb kneeling on its knees to drink milk, hoping that the younger generations will not forget the grace of their parents' upbringing; the flower buns given to older generations should be pinched into a human shape, called a "mianren", which means a house full of children and grandchildren, and a long life; the flower buns given to peers should be pinched into a fish shape, called a "mianyu", which means abundance year after year.
What to eat during the Ghost Festival: Steamed Lamb
In the old capital and rural areas of North China, it is a popular custom for grandfathers and uncles to give live sheep to their nephews on July 15th.
Legend has it that this custom is related to the legend of Chenxiang splitting the mountain to save his mother. After Chenxiang split the mountain to save his mother, he wanted to hunt down his uncle Erlangshen who abused his mother. In order to restore the friendship between brother and sister and uncle and nephew, Erlangshen would send Chenxiang a pair of live sheep on July 15th every year. It is said that this is a homonym of Erlangshen and Chenxiang's mother's surname "Yang" in order to restore the friendship between the two families. From then on, the custom of uncle sending a live sheep was left behind among the people, and later it gradually evolved into sending a pair of sheep.
Another version of this folk custom is that the mother uses white flour to make a pair of sheep for her married daughter, and of course they have to steam them, and the sheep's heads are wrapped with red cloth strips. The bride's family will form a small team to send the sheep to the new son-in-law's house. The new son-in-law will cut the sheep and hang the first piece with a red rope in the living room. This piece of "lamb meat" can only be taken down when the new sheep is delivered on July 15th of the following year.
The emphasis here is on "when the old sheep meets the new sheep, there will be surplus food every year." After the new son-in-law cuts up the sheep, he eats the sheep's head, the married girl eats the sheep's feet, and the rest is distributed to the man's elders and neighbors to show harmony and share joy and auspiciousness.
What to eat during the Ghost Festival: Dumplings
In Tiantai, Taizhou City, Zhejiang Province, they eat "jiaobing", a food similar to spring rolls, during the Ghost Festival.
According to legend, the dumpling roll was left by Jigong: When Jigong was a monk in Guoqing Temple, he saw a lot of leftovers from every meal, which he thought was a waste, so he wrapped the vegetables in hulatai skin and kept them for the next meal. This practice was loved by the monks and spread among the people.

The origin of the Ghost Festival on July 15th!

This festival originated from the early "Mid-July" festival when crops were harvested and ancestor worship was performed in autumn. The origin of "Mid-July" can be traced back to the ancient ancestor worship and harvest festivals. In ancient times, people often relied on the protection of gods for a good harvest. Ancestor worship takes place in spring, summer, autumn and winter, but the "autumn tasting" in early autumn is particularly important. Autumn is the harvest season. People hold ceremonies to offer sacrifices to the spirits of their ancestors, first offering the seasonal delicacies to the gods, then tasting the fruits of their labor and praying for a good harvest in the coming year.
The ancestor worship festival on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month is called the "Zhongyuan Festival", which originated from Taoism after the Eastern Han Dynasty (around the Northern Wei Dynasty). Among the Taoist gods there are the Heavenly Official, the Earthly Official, and the Water Official, collectively known as the "Three Great Officials". They are the representatives sent by the Emperor of Heaven to the human world. They inspect the merits and demerits of the human world on the "Three Yuan Days" to determine rewards and punishments: "The Heavenly Official bestows blessings on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the Earthly Official pardons sins on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, and the Water Official relieves disasters on the fifteenth day of the tenth lunar month." The Earthly Official is in charge of the underworld, and naturally the focus of his inspections is the ghosts.
The Zhongyuan Festival, Shangyuan Festival and Xiayuan Festival are collectively called the "Three Yuan Festivals". It is said that on the day of the Zhongyuan Festival, the underground palace opens the gates of hell, which is also the day when hell opens. All ghosts have to leave the underworld and be tested. Ghosts with owners go home, while ghosts without owners wander around the human world, looking for food everywhere. Therefore, it is also called the Ghost Festival. Activities to worship ghosts are generally held, and lotus lanterns are lit to light the way home for the dead souls. The Taoist temple held a grand ceremony to pray for good fortune, and Taoist priests held a ceremony to pray for the souls of the deceased to be liberated.
