The Origin of the End of Heat

Chushu, which means "out of summer", means the heat is leaving. Chushu is the 14th solar term among the 24 solar terms in the lunar calendar. It occurs on August 23 of the Gregorian calendar, when the sun reaches 150° of the ecliptic longitude. The solar term of Chushu means that we are about to enter autumn in meteorological terms. After Chushu, the temperature in the areas north of the Yellow River in China will gradually drop. End of Heat is a solar term that reflects changes in temperature. "Chu" means hiding and ending, and "Chushu" means the hot summer is over. my country divides the End of Autumn into three stages: "The first stage is when eagles start to hunt birds for sacrifice; the second stage is when heaven and earth begin to be quiet; the third stage is when crops are harvested." The book "Collected Explanations of the 72 Seasons of the Lunar Calendar" written by Wu Cheng of the Yuan Dynasty also said: "Chu means to go away. The summer heat ends here."
It means that when it comes to the solar term of Chushu, summer is over. At this time, there may be a heavy rain. When it rains, the temperature drops quite obviously. When the rain stops, the sun may come out again. At this time, people talk about morning and evening, that is, the temperature difference between morning and evening is quite large. So when it turns from summer to autumn, the change between cold and hot is quite large. If you don't pay attention, you are prone to some problems such as gastroenteritis, colds, etc. There has been a saying of "troublesome autumn" for a long time, and it really is a "troublesome autumn".
Of course, this coolness actually mainly applies to the northern region and southwestern high-altitude areas of our country. Around the beginning of summer, on the one hand, the sun's direct point begins to retreat southward, and on the other hand, the subtropical high pressure also begins to retreat southward. At the same time, the cold high pressure from the Mongolian Plateau begins to affect the northern part of our country. Therefore, in the book "Monthly Ordinances for Four Classes of People" of the Eastern Han Dynasty, there is a saying "In the middle of the Beginning of Heat, towards the Autumn Festival, wash the old clothes and make new ones", which means that after the Beginning of Heat, it is autumn and it is time to prepare clothes for the change of seasons.
But in fact, due to the southward movement of the subtropical high pressure, our country’s southern and southeastern coastal areas will still experience a period of hot weather around the Beginning of Autumn, which is commonly known as the "autumn tiger". Therefore, there is a saying that "according to local customs, the weather is still warm after the Beginning of Autumn, and turns cooler after about 18 days." Eighteen days after the Beginning of Autumn is after White Dew. Therefore, in the Jiangnan area, including where I am, there is a saying that "Eighteen Basins of Heat in the End of Autumn".
