The Origin of the Zhongyuan Festival

The origin of the Zhongyuan Festival:
Ghost Festival, also known as the Zhongyuan Festival, originated from the Buddhist Yulan Festival. According to legend, the parents of Maudgalyayana, a disciple of Sakyamuni, had both passed away. Before he became a monk, he missed his mother very much. After he attained enlightenment, he gained the ability to see through the sky and went to hell to look for his mother. He discovered that his mother had fallen into the realm of hungry ghosts. As soon as food entered her mouth, it turned into flames, and she suffered from extreme hunger. Mulian was unable to save his mother from distress, so he turned to the Buddha for advice on how to save his mother. The Buddha was moved by Mulian's filial piety and gave him the "Ullambana Sutra". Following the instructions, Venerable Mulian and other monks used the Ullambana Basin to hold hundreds of kinds of fruits, rice and vegetarian food to offer to the sentient beings in hell on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, and rescued his mother. Therefore, Buddhists hold a grand "Yulanpen Festival" every year, which is what we call the "Ghost Festival".
The second explanation of the origin of the Zhongyuan Festival:
Legend has it that Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva's mother went to the underworld after her death and was locked up in a cell, suffering all kinds of tortures of the eighteen levels of hell. Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was a filial daughter, and could not bear to see his mother suffer, so on the fifteenth day of July, she gave in to her private feelings and asked the little devil guarding the cell to secretly open the cell door to let his mother out. Unexpectedly, as soon as the cell door was opened, the little devils in the cell swarmed out and ran to the human world to harm the people. That's why there is a saying that "On the fifteenth day of July, ghosts run around." Those ghosts who ran back to their hometowns asked their families for money so that they could use it to live and to open up their joints in the hope of being reborn as soon as possible. Later people designated this day as Ghost Festival.

Is the Zhongyuan Festival a ghost festival?

Yes, the Zhongyuan Festival is also one of the four major ghost festivals in China.
The Ghost Festival, a traditional Chinese festival, is also known as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Fourteenth Day of the Seventh Month, the Ancestor Worship Festival, the Ullambana Festival, and the Earth God Festival. The main festival customs include worshiping ancestors, releasing river lanterns, worshiping the dead, burning paper ingots, and worshiping the land.
The "Mid-July Festival" was originally a folk festival for ancestor worship in ancient times, and it was called the "Zhongyuan Festival" because of the Taoist saying after the Eastern Han Dynasty. Taoism has the "Three Yuan Theory": "The Heaven Official Shang Yuan bestows blessings, the Earth Official Zhong Yuan forgives sins, and the Water Official Xia Yuan relieves disasters. The name "Zhong Yuan" comes from this.

The Zhongyuan Festival has a long history in my country. It has existed since ancient times, but it was called "Mid-July" in ancient times. It is a festival representing the autumn harvest of crops, celebrating the harvest and thanking the earth. Every year on the 15th day of July, some crops mature, and people traditionally worship their ancestors, using new rice and other offerings to report the autumn harvest to their ancestors. It is a cultural traditional festival that commemorates ancestors, and its cultural core is respecting ancestors and being filial.
