When is the Ghost Festival?

The Zhongyuan Festival is a folk festival for ancestor worship in ancient times. Taoism has the "Three Yuan Theory", "The Heaven Official Shangyuan bestows blessings, the Earth Official Zhongyuan forgives sins, and the Water Official Xiayuan relieves disasters." The name "Zhongyuan" comes from this.
This festival originated from the early "Mid-July" festival when crops were harvested and ancestor worship was performed in autumn. The origin of "Mid-July" can be traced back to the ancient ancestor worship and harvest festivals. In ancient times, people often relied on the protection of gods for a good harvest. Ancestor worship takes place in spring, summer, autumn and winter, but the "autumn tasting" in early autumn is particularly important. Autumn is the harvest season. People hold ceremonies to offer sacrifices to the spirits of their ancestors, first offering the seasonal delicacies to the gods, then tasting the fruits of their labor and praying for a good harvest in the coming year.

Why do we burn paper during the Ghost Festival?

According to superstitious legends, paper in the world of the living is money in the underworld, and people burn paper to send money to their deceased ancestors and relatives. Usually when burning paper at the grave, people would leave a few sheets and burn them at the crossroads. The purpose was to give some alms to the wild ghosts that could return to their homes, so that they would not rob the money given to their ancestors.
Legend has it that Cai Lun invented papermaking in the Eastern Han Dynasty. His brother Cai Mo, encouraged by his sister-in-law Hui Niang, went to Cai Lun to learn papermaking technology. However, Cai Mo was eager to make money, so he rushed back home to open his business without really mastering the skills. As a result, the quality of the paper he made was so poor that no one cared about it.
Hui Niang thought hard and came up with a plan. Late one night, Cai Mo burst into tears, alarming the neighbors around him. He said that Hui Niang hanged herself after the couple had an argument over papermaking. The next day, which was July 15th, Cai Mo pretended to be sad and remorseful. He cried loudly and burned the paper on fire. Everyone was trying to comfort her when suddenly Hui Niang woke up. She told everyone that the reason she was able to come back to life was because the King of Hell received the money sent by Cai Mo and released her back to the world. In the world of the living, people use copper as money, while in the world of the dead, people use paper as money. Everyone believed it and took out money to buy up all of Cai Mo's paper money so that they could burn paper money for their ancestors.
The custom of burning paper during the Ghost Festival originated from this.
