What is Cold Food Festival?

"Cold Food" is the 105th day after the winter solstice, usually one or two days before Qingming Festival in the lunar calendar. This festival was created to commemorate Jie Zitui, a famous scholar from the State of Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period. Jie Zitui was indebted to Prince Chong'er of Jin. After Chong'er became the king (Duke Wen of Jin), he wanted to invite Jie Zitui to come out of the mountains and serve as an official. Jie Zitui was unwilling, so he hid in the mountains. In order to force him to come out of the mountain, Chong'er set fire to the mountain. As a result, Jie Zitui would rather be burned to death than come out of the mountain. Later, in order to commemorate him, this day was designated as the "Cold Food Festival", which means no fire was allowed and cold food should be eaten. According to the "Cold Food" entry in Volume 4 of "Chuxueji" by Xu Jian of the Tang Dynasty, the tradition of banning fire may have existed in the Zhou Dynasty. The Cold Food Festival originally lasted for a long time, about a month, but later the number of days gradually decreased, until it only lasted a few days in a month. The Tang Dynasty poet Yuan Zhen's "Lianchang Palace Ci" says: "One hundred days after the Cold Food Festival, there is no smoke in the shops, but green in the government houses." This is a description of the scene of the Cold Food Festival.
