——About the characteristics of the Cold Food Festival

The Cold Food Festival is also known as "One Hundred and Five" because it falls 105 days after the winter solstice. A poem by Su Che of the Song Dynasty, "New Fire", reads: "Yesterday was one hundred and fifty, and the old osmanthus trees were all cold-eating." A poem by Mei Yaochen of the Song Dynasty, "Important Things about Cold-eating on a Journey in the Same Rhyme with Li Sheren", reads: "On the one hundred and fifty-day, the wind and rain were fierce, and the slanting breezes wetted my clothes in the spring countryside."
Fire is prohibited during the Cold Food Festival, and the fires that have been preserved in the winter are extinguished. When Qingming Festival comes, people have to drill wood to make fire again. A poem by Tang Dynasty poet Wei Zhuang: "Cold Food Festival flowers bloom like a thousand trees covered with snow, Qingming Festival fireworks emit smoke from thousands of houses."
The Cold Food Festival originated in the Spring and Autumn Period, when Jie Zitui was burned to death in Mianshan, Jiexiu. Duke Wen of Jin ordered that fire be banned and cold food be eaten on the anniversary of Zitui's death, as a way of expressing grief through the cold food. By the Tang Dynasty, it had become a national statutory holiday and was later merged with Qingming Festival. It is the earliest traditional Chinese festival. The Cold Food Festival dates back 2,640 years. During different historical periods, the duration of the festival has varied, including five days, 150 days, one month, three days, two, five, seven days, and finally one day. From Jiexiu and Taiyuan County to all parts of the country and even overseas (for example, Gaochang Kingdom designated March 9 as the Cold Food Festival since the Tang Dynasty).
