Volume 15 of Sui Shi Guangji by Chen Yuanliang of the Southern Song Dynasty quoted Sui Shi Miscellaneous Records by Lü Yuanming of the Song Dynasty saying: "The two days before Qingming Festival are the Cold Food Festival, and the days before and after are three days each, for a total of seven days off. The folks ban fire for 140 days, which is called the private Cold Food Festival, also known as the big Cold Food Festival. People in the north use this day to sweep and offer sacrifices to their ancestors' tombs, and this continues for months. There is a proverb that the Cold Food Festival lasts for one month."
