The Cold Food Festival is to commemorate Jie Zitui, a famous minister and righteous man of the State of Jin during the Spring and Autumn Period.
Legend has it that when Duke Wen of Jin was in exile, Jie Zitui cut off his own flesh to feed him.
Duke Wen of Jin returned to his country and became a prince, enfeoffed his ministers. However, Jie Zitui refused to accept the reward, so he took his old mother and lived in seclusion in Mianshan.
Later, Duke Wen of Jin went to Mianshan in person to invite Jie Zitui, but Jie Zitui was unwilling to be an official.
Hiding in the mountains, Duke Wen of Jin's men set fire to the mountain in an attempt to force Jie Zitui to show up. As a result, Jie Zitui was burned to death under a big willow tree while holding his mother.
In order to commemorate this loyal and righteous man, Duke Wen of Jin issued an order: on the day of Jie Zitui's death, no fire should be lit to cook, and only cold food should be eaten, which was called the Cold Food Festival.

Customs of Cold Food Festival: Fire is forbidden

The Cold Food Festival was also called the "No Smoking Festival" in ancient times. Every family was forbidden to light fire and everyone ate cold food.
However, due to the Chinese people's persistent feeling of commemorating the ancient sages, it was banned and revived repeatedly from the Eastern Han Dynasty to the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and the royal family of the Tang Dynasty recognized and participated in it.
The line "Let's try the new tea with the new fire" in Su Shi's "Wang Jiangnan from Chaoran Terrace" refers to the poet's act of making tea after the Cold Food Festival.
In Shanxi, the custom of banning fire during the Cold Food Festival is mostly one day, and only a few places still have the custom of banning fire for three days.
