The compass, called Sinan in ancient times, is mainly composed of a magnetic needle mounted on an axis. Under the action of the natural geomagnetic field, the magnetic needle can rotate freely and remain in the tangent direction of the magnetic meridian. There are twenty-four directions in total.
The "mao" in the compass represents the east, and the "wu" represents the south. "You" represents the west, "Zi" represents the north, "Xun" represents the southeast, "Kun" represents the southwest, "Gan" represents the northwest, and "Gen" represents the northeast.
