What is the difference between Qingming Festival and Zhongyuan Festival?

Different time:
1. The Zhongyuan Festival is also known as the "Ghost Festival" and "Mid-July". It is called the Yulan Festival in Buddhism. The Zhongyuan Festival falls on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month every year. The Ghost Festival originated from religion. Zhongyuan is a Taoist term, specifically referring to the birthday of the Taoist god Earth Official. Pan Rongbi of the Qing Dynasty explained the "Three Yuans" of the first month of the year in his book "Records of the Capital's Sui Shi Sheng" as follows: "The 15th day of the first month, the 7th day of the second month, and the 10th day of the third month are the birthdays of the Three Officials. The Heaven Official bestows blessings, the Earth Official pardons sins, and the Water Official relieves disasters."
2. Qingming Festival is one of the 24 solar terms. It falls between April 4 and 6 every year. Also known as the Outing Festival, it is held at the turn of mid-spring and late spring, which is the 108th day after the winter solstice. According to the Gregorian calendar, the traditional Qingming Festival began around the Zhou Dynasty and has a history of more than 2,500 years.
The objects of worship are different:
1. The first category of people worshipped during the Ghost Festival is ancestors. The second category of objects of worship are other ghosts. Therefore, in some places, July is also called the "Ghost Month" and memorial ceremonies are required, so the "Mid-July" has evolved into the "Ghost Sending Away Festival". Buddhists hold a grand "Yulanpen Festival" every year. Taoism also holds the "Zhongyuan Festival" on this day, offering food and burning ghost paper to give the homeless souls a full meal.
2. The Qingming Festival is a time to commemorate ancestors and sweep tombs. Qingming Festival is a day for descendants to remember their ancestors and offer sacrifices to them. Most filial sons and grandchildren will go to cemeteries, crematoriums or columbariums to perform worship ceremonies to express their grief, remembrance and nostalgia for their ancestors.

Ghost Festival customs in different regions:

Hebei: In Botou City and Nanpi County, people go to their ancestors' tombs to pay homage on July 15th, carrying fruits, dried meat, wine, paper money, etc. And carrying hemp to the stalks of the fields is called "Jianxin".
Shanxi: Shepherds in Changzi County slaughter sheep to worship gods during the Ghost Festival. It is said that this can increase sheep production. Meat was also given as gifts to relatives. Those who were poor and could not afford sheep would steam noodles in the shape of sheep instead.
Henan: During the Zhongyuan Festival in Shangqiu County, paper flags are hung at the door, which is said to repel insects.
Shandong: Every household in Zhanhua County collects hemp and fresh grass leaves to build a shed, called a "hemp house", where they place ancestral tablets for worship.
Shaanxi: Farmers in Chenggu County have a drinking party on the Ghost Festival, which is called "Gua Chu". Farmers go to the fields on the morning of the Ghost Festival, pick the tallest and densest rice ears, and hang five-colored paper flags called "field flags".
Sichuan: People in Chengdu make "flower plates" out of paper, put paper money and fruit offerings on them, hold them in their hands, and walk around the house chanting: "Dear friends, neighbors, former residents, the souls who are reluctant to go back, all the lonely ghosts, please get on the flower plate, I will send you back!" After saying this, they take the paper outside the house and burn it.
