The customs of Xiaoman

Grain Full is the eighth solar term in the 24 solar terms of the Chinese lunar calendar. It occurs from May 20 to 22 of the Gregorian calendar every year when the sun reaches 60° of the ecliptic longitude.
1. Summer Busy Meeting
Common people would hold a summer fair, the main purpose of which was to exchange and purchase production labor, buy and sell livestock, collect grains, etc. The fair usually lasted 3-5 days, and operas would be performed to liven up the atmosphere.
2. Offering three vehicles
There is a folk custom of offering sacrifices to the three vehicles. As the saying goes, "Grain Full season starts the three wheels (water wheel, oil wheel, silk wheel)." Drought is likely to occur during the Grain Full season, which is very unfavorable for crops. In the old days, farmers would start the water wheel to pump water for irrigation and drainage to alleviate the drought.
3. Silkworm Festival
In ancient times, people regarded silkworms as gifts from heaven. In order to pray for forgiveness from heaven and a good harvest from silkworm breeding, the Silkworm Prayer Festival is held in April every year when the silkworms are released.
During the Silkworm Prayer Festival, silkworm farmers would kneel before the Silkworm God Temple and offer tributes such as wine, fruits, and sumptuous dishes. At the same time, a mountain of straw is made and the specially made cocoon-shaped "noodle cocoon" is placed on it. It symbolizes a good harvest of silk cocoons.
4. Sell new silk
When the silk is woven into threads during the Grain Full season, each family carries the threads back to the city and sells them to merchants who collect the silk. In Wu, the silk market usually starts in the fourth month of the lunar calendar every year and ends in the evening, which is called selling new silk.
5. See the wheat tips turn yellow
In the Guanzhong region, every year when the wheat is about to mature, the daughter and the son-in-law will visit her parents' family with gifts and ask about the preparations for the summer harvest, just like it is a festival. After the wheat harvest is finished at her mother's home, the mother will visit her daughter and ask about her hard work. People call it "watching the wheat tips turn yellow."

Taboos on Grain Full Day

1. Avoid Jiazi Day or Gengchen Day
It is recorded in the old almanac: "If Grain Full falls on the Jiazi or Gengchen day, locusts will definitely damage rice crops." This means that if Grain Full falls on the Jiazi or Gengchen day, there will be a locust plague during the autumn harvest, which will eat up all the crops that the farmers have worked hard for a year. Therefore, it is very taboo for Xiaoman Day to happen to be Jiazi Day or Gengchen Day.
2. It is taboo if it doesn’t rain.
In the south, there are agricultural proverbs such as "If Grain Full is not fully ripe, the field ridges will dry up" and "If Grain Full is not fully ripe, there is no need to pay attention to Mangzhong." "Full" refers to the abundance or scarcity of rain. If the rice fields are not filled with water during Grain Full, the field ridges may dry up and crack, and rice may not even be planted during Grain in Ear. Moreover, less rainfall during the Grain Full solar term means that there will also be less rainfall during the Mangzhong solar term. Therefore, it is a taboo for Xiaoman to not rain.
