The first day of the first lunar month is the Spring Festival. It marks the beginning of a new year and is the most important traditional festival of the Chinese nation. The Spring Festival originated from the worship of gods and ancestors at the beginning and end of the year in the Shang Dynasty. It is the grandest, most lively and important ancient traditional festival in China.2. The Lantern Festival The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is the Lantern Festival, also known as Shangyuan, Yuanxiao, and Yuanye. There is a custom of watching lanterns and eating Yuanxiao (glutinous rice balls). People in the south make glutinous rice balls and people in the north roll Yuanxiao. 3. Cold Food Festival is two or one day before Qingming Festival. No fire is allowed and cold food must be eaten for three days. Legend has it that when Duke Wen of Jin was in exile, Jie Zitui cut off his own flesh to feed him. But when Duke Wen of Jin returned to his country and became king, he forgot about Jie Zitui when distributing fiefs. Jie Zitui did not want to boast about his achievements and win favor, so he lived in seclusion with his mother. 4. Qingming Festival Qingming Festival is on April 5th every year. The main activities are tomb sweeping and outing. Qingming is also one of the 24 solar terms. 5. Dragon Boat Festival The Dragon Boat Festival falls on the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar. Customs include dragon boat racing, eating rice dumplings, picking mugwort leaves, tying red strings, etc. It is said that this is to commemorate Qu Yuan who jumped into the Miluo River and died on this day. 6. Chinese Valentine's Day Chinese Valentine's Day is the seventh day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar, also known as the Qiqiao Festival. According to legend, the Cowherd and the Weaver Girl meet across the Milky Way on this night every year. Women place wine, dried meat, melons and fruits in the courtyard, and use five-colored threads to thread a seven-hole needle facing the moon. Those who pass this are considered clever, which is called Qiqiao. 7. Zhongyuan Festival Zhongyuan falls on the 15th day of the seventh lunar month. Double Ninth Festival The Double Ninth Festival falls on September 9th. Nine is the extreme yang number, hence the name. On this day, people have the custom of climbing heights, appreciating chrysanthemums, drinking wine and wearing dogwood. 10. New Year's Eve is the last night of the year. The old year ends on this night and the next day is the new year, hence the name.
