What can’t we do on Laba Festival?

1. Taoism records that no weddings or gatherings are allowed on Laba Festival. The eighth day of the twelfth lunar month is the Laba Festival for kings and princes. The Five Emperors determined the places where people were born, the divisions of land where they received blessings, and sent down 36,000 spirits. On this day, one can apologize for sins, pray for longevity, appease the gods, change one's reputation and position, change poverty, bathe, offer sacrifices to ancestors, hold grand offerings to the heavenly officials, and all wishes will be granted and those seeking the truth will be sure to obtain it. No gatherings or drinking are allowed on this day. You can walk quietly in the mountains or forests where there are altars, and recite theicas while walking. Your three souls and seven spirits should not be involved in worldly affairs. This is done on the twelfth day of the lunar month.
2. Don’t move house on Laba Festival. There is a folk custom of “don’t move house on Laba Festival”. People in Zhejiang province avoid moving house in the first or ninth month, as they believe that these months are unlucky. From the perspective of Feng Shui, the twelfth lunar month is relatively cold. If you move into a new house rashly, the cold atmosphere will block the prosperous atmosphere in your home.
In ancient my country, people generally did not like to move. As the saying goes, "Moving makes people poor and moving puts out fire." However, there may be special circumstances where you have to move, such as a natural disaster or other force majeure factors. In this case, it is believed that "a tree that is not moved will die, but a person who moves will live", so there is a saying that when moving, "abandon the old house and build a new one".
3. Not going back to your parents’ home on Laba Festival According to an old saying, there are always a few days in a year when a married daughter cannot go back to her parents’ home. It is said to be a taboo and has its own rules. Since the beginning of the twelfth lunar month, the first taboo day is Laba. Going back to your mother's home on Laba Day will bring bad luck to your mother-in-law, as she will die lying prone in a hundred years. Another saying goes: "If you don't eat rice from your mother's home on Laba Festival, your ancestors will not be able to pay it back", which means that your family will become poor. Some even believe that you cannot spend the twelfth lunar month at your parents’ home on the 8th, 18th, and 28th.
4. Don’t eat Laba porridge before noon. The eighth day of the twelfth lunar month is called Laba in folk customs. Since then, the “flavor of the New Year” has become increasingly stronger. The custom of eating Laba porridge on Laba Festival has a history of thousands of years in my country and has a unique origin. Regarding the habit of eating Laba porridge, there is a taboo in some places, that is, eating Laba porridge before noon. Every year, people start cooking Laba porridge the night before Laba Festival and eat it the next morning. If they cannot finish it, they can share it with relatives, friends, and neighbors, but not after noon. There is a saying that goes "Eat porridge early and the harvest will come early next year."
