What is the origin of the Frost Descent solar term and what legends are there about it?
The origin of the Frost Descent solar term is closely related to the natural environment. At the end of October, frost begins to fall in most parts of my country. So what is the origin of the Frost Descent solar term? What legends are there about Frost Descent? Mr. Shui Mo has carefully compiled detailed information about the ninth month of the lunar calendar in 2018. If you want to know the auspicious and inauspicious days in the ninth month of the lunar calendar, please go to Mr. Shui Mo.

Origin of the Frost Descent solar term:

Frost Descent occurs around October 23rd of the Gregorian calendar every year, when the sun reaches 210 degrees of the ecliptic longitude. Frost means the weather is getting colder and the dew condenses into frost. "Collected Explanations of the 72 Seasonal Changes" states: "In the middle of September, the air is cold and condensed, and the dew turns into frost." At this time, white frost had appeared in the Yellow River Basin in my country. Silver ice crystals were shining brightly on the thousands of miles of fertile fields. The leaves were turning yellow and falling. The ancient book “Explanation of the Twenty-Four Solar Terms” says: “When the weather becomes cold, frost falls, and the yin begins to condense.” It can be seen that “frost falls” means that the weather is gradually getting colder and frost begins to fall. In meteorology, the first frost in autumn is generally called "early frost" or "first frost", while the last frost in spring is called "late frost" or "final frost". The period from the last frost to the first frost is the frost-free period. Some people also call the early frost "chrysanthemum frost", because chrysanthemums are in full bloom at this time. Su Shi, a great writer in the Northern Song Dynasty, wrote a poem: "Thousands of trees are swept into yellow, only the lotus is fragrant alone."
Frost is formed by condensation of water vapor. How does water vapor condense into frost? The Southern Song Dynasty poet Lü Benzhong wrote in "Nan Ge Zi·Travel Thoughts": "The slanting moon intrudes into the post station, and the creek bridge is covered with late frost." Lu You wrote in "Frosty Moon": "The withered grass is covered with white frost, and the moon is reflected in the cold window." This shows that frost appears on a clear moonlit night in autumn. There are no clouds in the autumn evening, and the ground is like a quilt, which dissipates a lot of heat and causes the temperature to drop suddenly below 0℃. The little water vapor near the ground will condense on the streamside, bridges, leaves and soil, forming tiny ice needles, some of which become hexagonal frost flowers. Frost can only form on sunny days. This is why people say "thick frost and strong sun".

Legend about Frost Descent:

Flying Frost Green Lady <br /> Frost is a solar term with a fairy sister. This woman's name is Wu Jie, also known as Qingnv. She is said to be the sister of Wu Gang, the one who chopped the osmanthus tree, and the goddess in charge of frost and snow.
It is said in the Huainanzi Tianwen Xun: "In the third month of autumn, the earth's qi is no longer hidden, and it stops killing. All insects hibernate and stay indoors. Then the Blue Lady comes out to bring frost and snow." Gao You's note: "The Blue Lady is a celestial being, the Jade Lady of the Blue Sky, who is in charge of frost and snow."
On September 14 of that year, she came down to the human world and stood on the highest peak in the center of Qingyao Mountain. She played a seven-stringed harp with her hand, and clear sounds came out slowly. Frost and powder snowflakes floated down along with the trembling strings and sprinkled on the ground. Frost and snow cover up all the impurities in the world. Perhaps because she has always been accompanied by cold, the image of Qingnv is full of solemnity, and the pretentious literati have played a big role in this. Because they didn't like the falling of plants and trees, they blamed the crime on Qingnv.
Han Shan's poem says, "I often see withered willow catkins, which are often killed by the Green Lady." Zhang Xian's poem "Nan Xiang Zi" says, "The blood-colored light silk skirt is torn into pieces. All flowers have turned to frost, and the jealous girl is the God of Spring. She secretly plucks two flowers to borrow from the beginning of spring." The name "jealous" was added for no reason, as if the Green Lady was jealous of the beauty of the flowers and insisted on letting frost fall on the earth. Yao Nai's poem: "This year Qingnv is too lazy to bloom, and the yellow flowers have not yet bloomed on the branches on the ninth day." It is also Qingnv's fault that the chrysanthemums have not bloomed. The amorous Nalan Xingde did not let her go either: "Frost has fallen on the silver pond, bringing a new coolness, but the young girl is too frivolous."
The most widely circulated poem is Li Shangyin's "Frosty Moon": "When I first heard the migrating geese, there were no cicadas anymore; the water reached the sky from the hundred-foot-high building. Qingnu and Su'e are both cold-resistant, and they compete for beauty in the frost on the moon." Qingnu and Chang'e are not afraid of the cold, so they run to the Moon Palace to compare each other's appearance.
