Since she celebrated the Double Ninth Festival every year in the palace, she would wear dogwood branches and drink chrysanthemum wine during the festival in order to pray for longevity. So after she got married, she still celebrated the Double Ninth Festival according to the palace rules on this day. When people heard about it, they followed suit, and this custom became widely spread among the people.
Legend 2
A long time ago, there was a man named Huan Jing in Runan County. He and his parents, wife and family owned a few pieces of land and lived a peaceful and law-abiding life. Unexpectedly, a plague suddenly broke out on both sides of the Ru River, claiming the lives of many people. When Huan Jingzi was a child, he once heard adults say that there was a plague demon living in the Ru River, which came out every year to spread the plague and harm the world. In order to rid the villagers of harm, Huan Jing found out that there was an immortal named Fei Changfang living in the southeast mountains. Fei Changfang gave Huan Jing a Qinglong sword and asked him to practice the method of subduing demons. On the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar, a bag of dogwood leaves and a bottle of chrysanthemum wine are prepared, and the elders of the hometown are asked to climb high places to avoid disaster.
On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, he led all the villagers, young and old, to climb a nearby mountain. Give everyone a dogwood leaf to keep the plague away. They poured out some chrysanthemum wine and asked everyone to take a sip, saying that it could help ward off the plague. After making all the arrangements, he returned to the village with the Qinglong Sword and killed the plague demon. From then on, the people living on both sides of the Ru River were no longer affected by the plague. People have passed down the custom of climbing high places to avoid disasters on September 9th from generation to generation to the present day.
Legend Three
A long time ago, there was a farmer's family living at the foot of Mount Li. The whole family was very hardworking and lived a good life. One day, the owner of the house was coming back from the fields and met a fortune teller on the way. As it was getting dark, the fortune teller had not yet found a place to rest. As the host's house was very small and had only a thatched hut, he made a straw bed in the kitchen and let his wife and children sleep on it. He slept on the kang with the fortune teller and they made do with that. At dawn the next day, the fortune teller was about to leave, so the farmer woke up his wife, prepared a delicious meal for the fortune teller, and also packed a bag of white steamed buns for him. The fortune teller went out, looked at where the farmer lived, and warned him: "On September 9th, the whole family should go to a high place.
On the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, farmers would take their wives and children, carry on their backs cakes and wine, and climb to the top of Mount Li for an outing. After they climbed up the mountain, a spring suddenly emerged from halfway up the mountain and rushed straight towards his house, destroying his thatched hut in an instant. In a short time, the entire ravine was flooded. The farmer then understood why the fortune teller asked his family to climb the mountain on September 9th. After this story spread, people would go climbing on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, bringing their old and young together. This became a custom and has been passed down to this day.
