When is Grain Rain?

Grain Rain is one of the 24 solar terms.
The Grain Rain solar term, like other solar terms, comes into being to determine the seasonal climate. The Grain Rain solar term is at the star Douzhichen; the sun's ecliptic longitude is 30°; and it falls on April 19th to 21st of the Gregorian calendar every year.
After the Grain Rain solar term, the temperature rises, the rainfall increases, and the humidity in the air further increases, which is extremely suitable for the growth of cereal crops and is the best time for crop growth.
During the Grain Rain season, it often starts to get noticeably rainy in southern China, especially in southern China. Once cold air meets warm and humid air, it often causes prolonged rainfall. The Qinling-Huaihe area is a transitional area between the spring rain in the south and the spring drought in the north. From the Qinling-Huaihe area to the north, the spring rain decreases sharply. In the northern regions, Grain Rain symbolizes the "last frost".

Why is Guyu called Guyu?

Guyu is called Guyu because it is derived from the meaning of "rain brings forth all kinds of grains". "Qunfangpu" says: "Guyu, the grains grow because of the rain." Before and after Guyu, the rainfall increases, which is conducive to the sowing and growth of crops.
From an astronomical perspective, the ancients determined that Grain Rain occurs when the sun reaches 30° of the ecliptic longitude between April 19 and 21 each year. At this moment, the rice seedlings in the fields are just being planted, and many crops have also been recently sown and need rain to nourish them, so there is a saying among the people that "spring rain is as precious as oil."
During the Grain Rain solar term, as the temperature rises further, flowers bloom in many places, trees grow new branches, and the vibrant plants tell people that it is late spring. In some areas in the south, it may even feel "hot".
