1. Bailu Day is the day for offering sacrifices to the King of Shu
Bailu Festival is the day when the people of Taihu Lake offer sacrifices to the King of Yu. King Yu is the legendary flood control hero Dayu, and the fishermen on the shores of Taihu Lake call him the "Water Bodhisattva." Every year on the eighth day of the first lunar month, Qingming Festival, the seventh day of the seventh lunar month and the White Dew Festival, incense ceremonies to worship King Yu are held here. Among them, the Qingming Festival and the White Dew Festival in spring and autumn are the largest and last for a week.
While offering sacrifices to King Yu, people also offer sacrifices to the god of land, the god of flowers, the silkworm girl, the door gods, the god of the house, Jiang Taigong, etc. During the event, "Fishing and Killing the Family" is a must-perform play, which expresses people's hope and yearning for a better life.
2. It is advisable to collect "Ten Kinds of White" on the White Dew Day
There is a custom of celebrating the White Dew Festival in Wenzhou, Zhejiang and other places. In Cangnan, Pingyang and other places, people collect "10 kinds of white" (some say "three kinds of white") on this day to stew black-bone white-feathered chicken (or duck). It is said that eating it can nourish the body and remove wind (arthritis). These "10 kinds of white" are ten kinds of herbs with the word "white" in them, such as white hibiscus and white bitter, which correspond to the literal meaning of "white dew".
3. Tianjiu is suitable during the Bailu season . On the Bailu day, people in Shanghai will apply dew and ink on the forehead and back of children, saying that it can eliminate all diseases. Locals call it "Tianjiu". If there is a pregnant woman in the family, they will cut some bitter herbs and store them early in the morning, and boil them into soup for the pregnant woman to ensure a smooth delivery.
4. During the Bailu season, it is appropriate to play cricket fighting .
During the Bailu season when farmers are not busy, people in the countryside will play cricket fighting, which is called "Qiuxing". Cricket fighting during the White Dew Festival has been popular among the people since the Song Dynasty, and was mainly practiced among princes and nobles at the time. This trend became even more popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Gu Lu of the Qing Dynasty recorded this in detail in "Qing Jia Lu": "Around the time of White Dew, people domesticate crickets for the fun of gambling and fighting, which is called 'Autumn Excitement', commonly known as 'Fighting to Earn Money'. During the White Dew season, people carry cages and face each other, forming groups and calling the insects generals." The selection of crickets before a fight is very particular. "The ones with big heads and long feet are valuable, and the ones with green, yellow, red, black and white colors are the best." After the crickets are selected, "they should be of similar size and weigh evenly, and then the gate should be opened." During the fight, on the stage "the two sides recognize each other's colors, either red or green, which is called 'head recognition.'" The spectators below the stage will determine the winner based on the outcome of the fight, which is called 'labeling the gate.' Dividing the chips is called "flowering". "Hua" is a pseudonym. One hundred and twenty coins are equal to one Hua. The amount of Hua varies from one Hua to one hundred Hua or one thousand Hua, depending on the agreement between the two families. The winner gets a prize, and the loser loses money. There is no fee involved.
Until now, cricket fighting is still a major entertainment activity for ordinary people, especially in Beijing. When the White Dew Festival comes, people will take the crickets they have carefully raised and go to open fields to fight. The audience is also in high spirits and watch the fight attentively, making the scene very lively.
5. Avoid wind and rain on Bailu Day
In folk culture, avoid wind and rain on Bailu Day. People believe that wind and rain on the White Dew Day will have an adverse effect on agricultural harvests. There is a proverb that goes, "If it rains on the White Dew Day, everything will be ruined," and "It rains before the White Dew Day and ghosts after the White Dew Day." There is also a proverb that goes, "The rain on the Beginning of Heat is sweet, and the rain on the White Dew Day is bitter. "Farmers believe that the rain during the Bailu season is bitter and will make vegetables bitter; harvested rice will also be eaten by insects if it comes into contact with the Bailu rain.
In addition, wind during the White Dew season can cause harm. There is a saying that goes, "If the wind blows northeast on the White Dew day, nine out of ten bolls (cotton bolls) will be rotten; if the wind blows northwest on the White Dew day, nine out of ten bolls will be empty."
