How did Mother's Day come about?

The legend about Mother's Day can be traced back to ancient Greece. At that time, the Greek people would hold celebrations to commemorate the legendary mother of the gods, Cybia, every spring. However, at that time, there was no formal festival.
After the end of the American Civil War, a lady named Jarvis, moved by the fact that those mothers had contributed so many brave warriors to the motherland, while these mothers had to endure tremendous pain alone while their own children shed their blood on the battlefield, suggested that a special holiday should be set up to commemorate them, or at least to comfort their hearts. In this way, Mother's Day was officially proposed. Unfortunately, Mrs. Jarvis passed away before her wish came true. But her wish was inherited by her daughter Anna Jarvis.
Anna Jarvis wrote dozens of letters to the U.S. Congress, local governors, women's organizations, etc., all of which advocated the establishment of Mother's Day. Thanks to her efforts, the concept of Mother's Day received great response and support from the society. Until 1914, U.S. President Wilson officially announced that the second Sunday of May each year (also the anniversary of Mrs. Jarvis' death) would be designated as Mother's Day.

Mother's Day legend

According to legend, a long time ago, there was a beach on the southern plain of Liaoning. There lived a poor family on the beach, consisting of only a mother and her son. In order for her child to have a successful future, the mother worked the fields during the day and wove at night, working tirelessly to support her child's studies. Finally, when the time came for the imperial court to hold a major examination, the child said goodbye to his mother and went to Beijing to take the exam. After the child left, the old mother was left alone. Every day she would look at the road her son took when he left, hoping that he would return. This went on for one year, two years, three years... ten years, twenty years, thirty years, but the mother never waited for her son to return and collapsed. The fallen mother turned into a stone statue standing on the seashore still waiting for her son to return. However, what she didn't know was that her son had unfortunately fallen into the sea and died when he went out to sea that year, so no matter how hard she waited, she would never see his return. The mother's love for her son moved the heavens, who built a mountain at the spot where the mother stood waiting for her son to return, and the tears shed by the mother became underground hot springs. From then on, the mountain was called "Wang'er Mountain", and later generations built the Motherly Tower on the top of the mountain and the Motherly Pavilion at the foot of the mountain to reflect the mother's ordinary yet great love.
