What is the origin of May Day?

In 1866, the Geneva Conference of the First International put forward the slogan of an eight-hour working day. On May 1, 1886, a large-scale strike and demonstration involving about 350,000 people was held in the United States, centered in Chicago. The demonstrators demanded improved working conditions and the implementation of an eight-hour workday.
On May 3, 1886, the Chicago government sent out police to suppress the riot and shot and killed two people. The situation escalated, and on May 4, striking workers held a protest in Haymarket Square. Unidentified people threw bombs at the police, who eventually opened fire. A total of four workers and seven police officers died. This is known in history as the "Haymarket Riot" or "Haymarket Massacre."
In the subsequent verdicts, eight anarchists were charged with murder, four were hanged, and one committed suicide in prison. Workers' protests were held around the world to commemorate this great workers' movement and to protest the subsequent verdict. These activities became the predecessor of "International Labor Day".
To commemorate this workers' movement, on July 14, 1889, the Socialist Congress convened by Marxists from various countries was grandly opened in Paris, France. At the conference, everyone unanimously agreed to designate May 1 as the common holiday of the international proletariat. This resolution received a positive response from workers around the world. On May 1, 1890, the working class in Europe and the United States took the lead in taking to the streets, holding grand demonstrations and rallies to fight for their legitimate rights and interests.
