Folk customs are the characteristics of a nation, and the folk customs of a nation are the embodiment of its traditions and culture. Many of our country’s folk customs are expressed in conjunction with festivals. February 2nd, the Dragon Raising its Head, is one of our country’s traditional festivals. Is there any legend about this day? The beautiful spring has arrived, flowers are blooming, birds are singing, all things are beginning to wake up, and there is a vibrant scene everywhere. The Fortune Teller website takes you to experience the second month of the lunar calendar in 2018! Can I go back to my parents’ home on February 2nd? The second day of the second month of the lunar calendar. There is a very popular nursery rhyme in my hometown called "Pulling the Big Saw", which talks about the custom of welcoming the great-aunt. The lyrics are: "Pull the big saw, pull the big saw, there's a big show at grandma's door. Pick up the girl, call the son-in-law, and the little nephew, who also wants to go. How can I go without wearing flowery shoes? I'm going home with a broomstick!" Welcoming the aunt is an old custom of our Manchu people, and there are many rules. The Manchus in my hometown are the mainstream of Beijing's Eight Banners immigrants. The day to pick up my aunt is the second day of the second month, so the saying goes "On the second day of the second month, pick up your baby." Why do we have to pick up my aunt on the day of "Dragon Raising its Head"? It is said that according to old customs, aunts are not allowed to see the lanterns in the first month of the year at their parents' home, nor can they live in their parents' home. Even if you visit your parents' home on the second day of the first lunar month to pay New Year's greetings, you must leave before the lights are hung, especially if you are a newly married lady. February 2nd is the first double-day in the first lunar month, so it is designated as the day to pick up my aunt. On the second day of the second month, my aunt's family would send someone who was good at speaking to pick her up. The aunt went back to her parents' home with her children, carrying a red bag and wearing green clothes, in a proud manner. Of course, there are exceptions. If the husband's family has some reasons and does not agree, the person who takes over will inevitably be dejected, and the mother in the wife's family will cry and wipe her tears. As the nursery rhyme goes: "On the second day of the second month, pick up your baby. If you can't pick him up, you'll cry." The Manchu people in Liaoning and Jilin are more flexible. They usually pick up their aunts on the 16th, 18th, 20th or other even days of the first lunar month, as long as the Lantern Festival is avoided. When picking up my great-aunt, there is no fanfare like the "big show at grandma's door" in the nursery rhyme, but it must be done in a formal manner. When you bring gifts to your son-in-law's house, you must explain your purpose to the elders (usually your grandmother, mother-in-law or mother-in-law), and politely ask for leave from your aunt. If permission is granted, I will "ask for permission" to stay for a few more days. The number of days stipulated by the son-in-law's family is also an even number, which implies the auspiciousness of a couple. After being "approved", the impatient aunt was able to dress up and pack her things. Whenever you receive a great-aunt, you are also receiving her grandson, and you must be courteous to the aunt's elder and younger sisters-in-law. In fact, they are absolutely unwelcome because they like to gossip, and giving way to them is to prevent them from being picky about gifts. If a young and inexperienced person wants to go with her, the mother-in-law will step forward to stop him and refuse him. Before leaving, the person who picks up the aunt has to pay respects to the elders of the husband's family, and also say hello to the eldest and younger sisters-in-law, before they can set off. |
