What is Aojiu Festival

Aojiu Festival is a traditional folk festival in the ten counties of Fuzhou, Fujian Province, which falls on the 29th day of the first lunar month. On this day, every household cooks Aojiu porridge to offer sacrifices to their ancestors or give it to relatives and friends; married women also have to send Aojiu porridge back to their parents' home to honor their parents. In ancient times, there was a man named Mulian. His mother did not do good deeds during her lifetime, and as a result, she was punished by God. She died at the age of 39 and was sent to hell, where she was not given food. Mulian couldn't bear to see his mother starve, so he went to bring her food every day, but it was eaten by the little ghosts on guard. From the first day to the twenty-ninth day of the first lunar month, all the New Year's food had been cooked, so we had to make porridge with glutinous rice, peanuts, dried fruits, brown sugar and other things. The little ghost had never seen porridge of this color, so he asked what kind of porridge it was. Mulian answered casually, "Houjiu porridge." In the Fuzhou dialect, "hou" and "ao", "jiu" and "gu" are homophones, so the little ghost heard it as "aogu porridge". The little ghost was afraid to eat it, and finally relieved Mulian's mother from the suffering of being a hungry ghost.
This folk story contains the culture of filial piety, so the Houjiu Festival is also called "Xiaojiu Festival" or "Aojiu Festival". In fact, the word "ao" means to break, which has nothing to do with cooking different foods together; and in the Fuzhou dialect, "ao" and "hou" are not homophonic, so "ao" is correct. On the day of the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, every family cooks sweet porridge and adds red dates, peanuts, longan meat, etc. to it. Ages that are multiples of nine are called Mingjiu, and ages that are multiples of nine are called Anjiu. Relatives and friends will invite you to eat eggs or noodles to celebrate the ninth day of the ninth month. In the old days, people lacked scientific knowledge about birth, aging, illness and death. They believed that nine was an odd number, which meant bad luck. They feared that individuals were unable to overcome difficulties and had to rely on the help of relatives and friends. Eating eggs and vermicelli is a sign of a safe passage and a long, blessed life.
There is also a custom of "passing the nine" during the Houjiu Festival in Fuzhou. One is the people whose age is a multiple of nine, such as 9, 19, 29... The other is the people whose age is a multiple of nine, such as 18, 27, 36... Both types of people have to eat "Taiping Noodles" on this day. Because the ancients believed that "nine" was a "barrier" to age. After passing this barrier, you can move up to one, and then continue to increase. The reason why this custom has been passed down is that it also contains care for life.
Because the ingredients used in Aojiu Congee are sweet and warm, they nourish the spleen, replenish qi and keep out the cold, so eating it in the cold first month of the year has the effect of prolonging life.
A lot of porridge needs to be cooked for the ninth day of the lunar calendar. In addition to having it as breakfast for the family on the same day, the remaining porridge can be eaten as a snack in the following days until the second day of the second lunar month, so the second day of the second lunar month is called "Hou Jiu Zai". People in Fuzhou often say that the food prepared for the New Year at home can be eaten until the second day of the second lunar month. "Aojiu Festival" is not only a filial festival to respect, love and help the elderly, but also a festival to get rid of diseases and disasters, get rid of poverty and move towards a well-off life.
