What is the Lantern Festival also called?

Every year on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, just after the Spring Festival, China welcomes its traditional festival - the Lantern Festival.
The first month of the lunar calendar is the first month of the year. The ancients called the night "xiao", so the fifteenth day of the first month is called the "Lantern Festival". The fifteenth day of the first lunar month is the first full-moon night of the year. It is also the night when a new year begins and the earth returns to spring. People celebrate this night, which is also a continuation of the celebration of the New Year. The Lantern Festival is also known as the "Shangyuan Festival."
According to Chinese folk tradition, on this night when the moon is high in the sky, people light up thousands of colorful lanterns to celebrate. Go out to admire the moon, light lanterns and fireworks, guess lantern riddles, eat Yuanxiao together, reunite with family, and celebrate the festival together in great joy.
The Lantern Festival is also known as the Lantern Festival. The custom of lighting lanterns during the Lantern Festival originated in the Han Dynasty. In the Tang Dynasty, the lantern-viewing activities became more prosperous. Lanterns were hung everywhere in the palace and on the streets. Tall lantern wheels, lantern towers and lantern trees were also built. The great Tang Dynasty poet Lu Zhaolin once described the grand occasion of lighting lanterns during the Lantern Festival in "Watching Lanterns on the 15th Night" as follows: "The sky looks like falling stars, and the sky looks like hanging moon."

What are the traditional customs of the Lantern Festival?

Hanging Lanterns:
This custom originated in the Eastern Han Dynasty and became popular during the Southern and Northern Dynasties. In the Tang Dynasty, the Lantern Festival lasted for three days, from the 14th to the 16th of the first lunar month. In the Song Dynasty, it was changed to five days, and in the Ming Dynasty it was changed to ten days. In the Qing Dynasty, lanterns were hung in the palace starting from the Little New Year. There is a beautiful legend about hanging lanterns among the people. In ancient times, a hunter shot and killed a divine goose. The Jade Emperor was furious when he heard the news. He wanted to avenge the divine goose and burn the human world on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. A kind-hearted fairy sneaked down to the mortal world and reported the news to people. People decided to hang red lanterns and set off fireworks in every household around the fifteenth day of the first lunar month so that when the heavenly soldiers were about to descend to the earth, a sea of fire would be seen. Thinking that the fire had already started, he did not go down to the mortal world but reported directly to the Jade Emperor. Thus, the human world was spared from disaster. From then on, every household would hang lanterns on this day. To this day, there are still many lantern festivals and exhibitions across the country on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month. The famous ones include the Lantern Festival in Beihai Park in Beijing, the Zigong Lantern Festival in Sichuan, the Harbin Ice Lantern Festival and so on.
Dragon Dance Lantern:
Legend has it that there was a severe drought one year in the Tang Dynasty. The Dragon King made mistakes and caused rain, drowning many people in Chang'an. The Jade Emperor ordered Wei Zheng to behead the Dragon King. After that, the Dragon King's spirit lingered and disturbed the palace every night, which frightened Emperor Li Shimin. So he asked his ministers for advice, and they thought that the Dragon King should be liberated. So the people started the custom of playing with dragon lanterns on the Lantern Festival. Dragon lanterns are usually made of bamboo, wood, colored paper, cloth, etc. They have an odd number of sections and are several meters long. The ones that can burn candles within the sections are called "dragon lanterns", while the ones that cannot burn candles are called "cloth dragons". When dancing the dragon, the lead dancer holds the dragon head, and dozens of people follow behind, holding up wooden sticks connected to the dragon's body. The whole dragon runs along the prescribed route and formation to the sound of music. The dragon seems to be alive, and people use it to pray for good weather and a good harvest.
