By checking the almanac, we find that among the days that are suitable for and not suitable for [what is suitable for today], there is [sacrifice], so the 24th of the first lunar month in 2018 is a day of sacrifice. The sacrifice is divided into nine ceremonies, namely welcoming the gods, laying down jade and silk, entering the group, the first offering, the second offering, the final offering, removing the writing, sending off the gods, and burying the dead. Different pieces of music are played for each ceremony (Appendix). Dance the civil and military "Ba Yi" dance (a dance performed exclusively for the emperor in ancient times consisting of 64 people). In the seventh year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty, Ditan Temple was allocated 480 students in civil, military, musical and dancing fields and 90 students as deacons. This shows how huge the music and dance troupe was at that time.
For each ceremony, the emperor had to kneel three times and kowtow nine times to the main seat, the supporting seats, and the subordinate seats respectively. From welcoming the gods to seeing off the gods, he had to kneel more than 70 times and kowtow more than 200 times, and the process took two hours. Such a large amount of activity was a huge burden for the emperor, so when the emperor was old and frail, he usually did not pay homage in person, but sent princes or princes to perform the ceremony on his behalf.
The discipline requirements at the memorial service are extremely strict. The emperor often issued edicts that accompanying officials must be pious and disciplined, not be late or leave early, not cough or spit, not walk around or make noise, not allow idle people to peek, and not disrupt order. Otherwise, no matter who it is, they will be severely punished.
After the sacrifice, according to the regulations, meat must be distributed to relevant officials, which is called "Ban Zao". Before the sacrifice, the Taichang Temple was responsible for registering the sacrifices and issuing the meat certificates to various government offices. After the sacrifice, each government office went to the sacrifice site to collect yesterday's order.
