Legend has it that in ancient times, the son of Gaoyang wore tattered clothes and trousers in the first month of the lunar year, lived a lazy life, and later died tragically in an alley. In Guangdong and Fujian, Cantonese people regard the third day of the Lunar New Year as the "Day to Send Away Poverty", while Hakka people call this day "Triple Day" or "Day of Worms" based on the homonyms of the two words "send away poverty". Fujian people have the same saying, believing that this day is the "Poor Ghost Day" (or "Red Ghost Day"). It is said that after New Year's Day, people cannot sweep the floor until at least the third day of the first lunar month. On this day, cleaning out the garbage from the house or dumping it into the ditch has the good intention of clearing out the "poor ghost"; it is also said that this night is the big day for mice to marry their daughters in every household.
