Dumplings have become an indispensable food during the Spring Festival for four reasons:
First, according to ancient customs, dumplings are food eaten after New Year's Day sacrifices. During the Chinese New Year, people pay attention to making dumplings while staying up all night and eating them at the end of the year, that is, at midnight. This is the time when two years turn, and the old and the new are greeted, so it has special significance. "Zi" means "changing the year and handing over the child", and "jiao" is a homophone for "dumplings", which means joyful reunion and good luck, and indicates good luck in the new year.
Second, the dumplings are shaped like ingots. People eat dumplings during the Spring Festival to bring in wealth and treasure.
Third, dumplings have stuffing, which makes it convenient for people to wrap all kinds of auspicious and festive things into the stuffing to express their good expectations for the new year.
Fourth, dumplings themselves are delicious. There is a folk saying that "nothing is more comfortable than lying down, and nothing is more delicious than dumplings." The custom of eating dumplings during the Spring Festival was quite popular during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Dumplings should be wrapped before midnight on New Year’s Eve and eaten at midnight, which is the beginning of the first day of the first lunar month. Eating dumplings means "changing the year and handing over the child". "Zi" means "midnight", and "jiao" is homophonic with "dumplings", which means "joyful reunion" and "good luck".
In this cold New Year's day, it is so wonderful to cook hot dumplings to warm your body and stomach, and to happily express your endless care and blessings to your family.
