Introduction and analysis of the Great Cold solar term
I believe many people know that China has the traditional 24 solar terms, but few people know that Dahan is the last solar term of the 24 solar terms in my country. In ancient China long ago, people invented the 24 solar terms to guide agricultural life. As time goes by, many places in China still carry out agricultural work according to the 24 solar terms. This shows the wisdom of the ancient Chinese working people. Entering the Great Cold solar term also means that we are about to usher in a new year. Let’s learn about the Great Cold solar term together. "Dahan" means that the weather is extremely cold, although due to climate change today, the coldest day in most parts of my country is still Dahan. The date of Dahan is generally around January 20th every year. On this day, the sun reaches 300° of the ecliptic longitude and the temperature drops to the lowest point of the year, hence the name "Dahan". In ancient my country, the Great Cold was usually divided into three stages, which were said to be "the first stage is that chickens lay eggs; the second stage is that migratory birds fly fast; the third stage is that the bellies of water birds in marshes become hard." Different things should be done on different days. There is a Chinese saying about eating glutinous rice : "Minor Cold is cold by itself, and no wind is cold by itself." Major Cold is the coldest day of the year. In ancient times, poor families had nothing but bare walls, and their measures to prevent the cold were relatively simple. They also did not have much money for tonic food, so they used glutinous rice as a nutritional supplement to replenish their bodies. Glutinous rice is a high-calorie food, so eating glutinous rice has the effect of keeping out the cold. Today, people have higher demands for food, so there are many ways to cook glutinous rice. In traditional Chinese medicine, it even has the effect of nourishing the middle and replenishing qi.
The year-end festival and the Great Cold are the last solar terms in China. The arrival of the Great Cold also means that we are about to usher in the New Year. At the same time, there are many folk customs and festivals from the Great Cold to the Spring Festival. Therefore, in ancient times, when the Great Cold came, people began to get rid of the old and bring in the new, pickle New Year dishes, and prepare New Year goods. The village covered with heavy snow seemed to have regained its youth, and the whole world was filled with a happy atmosphere.
In Chinese tradition, the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month is the Kitchen God Festival, so the custom of worshiping the Kitchen God is indispensable. According to folk legend, the Kitchen God is a deity sent by the Emperor of Heaven to examine the good and evil of every household, and at the end of each year he would return to the Heavenly Palace to report on the people's situation. Therefore, the fundamental meaning of the custom of worshiping the Kitchen God is to let the Kitchen God say more good things and less bad things when reporting to the Emperor of Heaven. There are also different traditions of worshiping the Kitchen God in different places, so I will not go into details here. The Great Cold solar term is still the slack season for farming in most parts of my country, so in the northern regions, we must strengthen the work of protecting livestock from cold and frost, maintain the fields, and start composting and accumulating fertilizers to prepare for the beginning of next spring. In the southern region, good field management work needs to be done so that wheat and other crops can have a good harvest next year. There is less rainfall in South China during this period, but the overwintering crops themselves require less water, so there is no need to specially choose the time to irrigate the crops. Of course, we also need to judge based on the actual weather conditions. If there is no rainfall for a long time, timely irrigation will be of great benefit to the growth of wheat crops.
