It is the birthday of Qiu Chuji, the head of the mainstream Quanzhen Taoism. In the Ming Dynasty, "A Brief Account of Scenery in the Imperial Capital" written by Liu Dong and Yu Yizhen recorded the 19th day of the first lunar month as follows: "It is said that on this day, a true man will surely come, transforming himself into a gentleman, a wandering official or a prostitute, or a beggar. Therefore, tens or hundreds of feathered priests gather under the pine trees in the hope of meeting him by chance."In other words, according to popular legend, on the 18th night of the first lunar month, Qiu Chuji returns to his former residence disguised as a nobleman, an official, a tourist, a woman, or a beggar. Whoever is lucky enough to meet this immortal will be cured of illness and live longer. As the rumor spread, even the emperor of the time sent his ministers to set up a banquet and hold a grand sacrifice in Baiyun Temple. Starting from the 18th, pilgrims from all over the country came to Baiyun Temple from all directions to burn incense and worship. Qiu Chuji's disciples built several simple sheds under the pine trees in the temple and practiced meditation and preaching. Some tourists simply hide in a secluded place in the temple, staying up all night, waiting for the right opportunity to meet Master Qiu. On the 19th, the day of Yanjiu Festival, there was a huge crowd of tourists and traffic inside and outside Baiyun Temple, and the activities reached a climax. As time went by, the content of the Yanjiu Festival became increasingly rich and colorful, gradually forming a large temple fair. There are drama performances, martial arts acrobatics, local snacks, handicrafts exhibitions and sales, etc. The atmosphere of the temple fair is lively and the scale is grand.
