What customs and practices are observed during the Autumnal Equinox?

1. Autumn Moon Worship
In ancient times, there was a saying that “Spring is for the sun, and autumn is for the moon.” According to research, the Moon Festival was originally scheduled for the Autumnal Equinox. Later, as there was not necessarily a full moon on this day every year, the Moon Festival was moved from the Autumnal Equinox to the Mid-Autumn Festival. There are still many ancient monuments of "Moon Worship Altars", "Moon Worship Pavilions" and "Moon Viewing Towers" remaining in various parts of my country. The folk customs of worshiping the moon vary from region to region. There is a special custom in Beijing's moon worship, which is that "when offering sacrifices to the moon, most men do not kowtow." This is what the folk saying means "Men do not worship the moon." In Hangzhou, the moon worship ceremony is called "Ramadan Palace". The Guangdong Moon Festival is a ritual of worshipping a wooden statue of the Moon god wearing a phoenix crown and a bridal robe.
2. Stand the egg
"When the autumnal equinox comes, the eggs will be pretty." On the spring or autumnal equinox every year, tens of millions of people in many parts of my country will do the "egg standing up" experiment. Choose a fresh egg with a "well-proportioned body" and place it upright on the table carefully. Although there are many failures, there are also many successes. The upright egg looks so spectacular.
3. Eating autumn vegetables
In the Lingnan region, the Xie family in Cangcheng Town, Kaiping, one of the four counties (now five counties with Heshan), has a non-festival custom called "eating autumn vegetables on the autumnal equinox." "Qiucai" is a kind of wild amaranth, which the locals call "Qiubihao". It is mostly tender green, with thin stems, about the length of a palm. On the day of the Autumnal Equinox, the whole village goes out to pick autumn vegetables. The vegetables are usually boiled with fish fillets in a soup called "Autumn Soup" to pray for peace and prosperity in the home.
4. Worship
Folk festivals around the Autumnal Equinox include: the birthday of Kaizhang Shengwang on February 15; the birthday of Guanyin Bodhisattva on February 19. On each birthday, believers mostly eat vegetarian food and go to various Guanyin temples to worship; the Sanshan King Memorial Day on February 25: The Sanshan King refers to the mountain gods of Dushan, Mingshan and Jinshan in Jieyang County, Chaozhou Prefecture, Guangdong Province. In the early years, they were adopted by Hakka immigrants from Chaozhou as their patron saints, so the believers are mainly Hakka people.
5. Sending autumn cows
During the autumnal equinox, there is a custom of sending autumn cow pictures to every household. A piece of red or yellow paper is printed with the lunar calendar’s solar terms and pictures of farmers plowing the fields throughout the year, and it is called the “Autumn Oxen Picture”. The sender of the picture would say something about autumn ploughing and auspiciousness that does not violate the farming season. He would say whatever he saw, and although it came out casually, every sentence was rhythmic and pleasant to the ear. It is commonly known as "talking about autumn", and the sender would stop until the host was happy and gave him money.
6. Sticky Sparrow Mouth
On the day of the Autumnal Equinox, farmers take a holiday according to custom, and every family eats glutinous rice balls. Glutinous rice balls are mostly made of glutinous rice as the main raw material and some other ingredients. The added ingredients are often high in sugar and calories, which help to replenish the body's heat energy, replenish deficiency, regulate blood, and raise yang and strengthen the spleen. Farmers also need to cook more than ten or twenty to thirty glutinous rice balls without fillings, and place them on the edges of fields outdoors with thin bamboo forks. This is called "catching the sparrows' beaks" to prevent sparrows from destroying the crops.
