What does leap June mean?

There are twenty-four solar terms in the ancient Chinese calendar, which are divided into solar terms and middle terms. There are two solar terms in each lunar month. The first month is called the solar term, and the middle month is called the middle term. For example, the Beginning of Spring is the solar term of the first month, and Rain Water is the middle term of the first month. But in the Gregorian calendar, the average length of the two solar terms is 30.5 days, while each month in the lunar calendar is only 29.5 days, a difference of 1 day. Therefore, the solar term of each month will be 1-2 days later than the previous month. In the long run, there will always be a month with only solar terms but no solar term.
In this regard, the ancient Chinese adopted the method of setting leap months. If a lunar month only had solar terms but no solar term, the calendar would treat that month as a leap month of the previous month. The so-called leap June means that after the sixth lunar month there is a month with only solar terms but no solar term. Therefore, the month without the solar term is set as a leap June to adjust the error.

How often does a leap June occur?

During the course of a year, the distance between the Earth and the Sun increases and decreases. When the Earth is far away from the Sun, which is around June in the Gregorian calendar, its movement is slow, so the interval between two solar terms is long, and the longest can exceed 31 days. Based on the average length of the previous two solar terms of 30.5 days, there is a high possibility that there will be no solar term in the month, and the possibility of a leap month is also high, so there are more chances of a leap April, leap May, and leap June.
Around December of the Gregorian calendar, the Earth is close to the Sun and moves fast, so the interval between two solar terms is short, with the shortest being just over 29 days, which is shorter than a lunar month. Therefore, the possibility of no solar terms in the first, eleventh and twelfth months is small, and the chance of a leap month is relatively small.
Leap June is a common leap month in the Chinese lunar calendar, but its frequency and interval are not constant. Over time, the frequency of leap June will gradually decrease from the highest level. A leap June usually occurs once every 19 years (such as between 1960 and 1979), but sometimes it occurs once every 38 years (such as between 1835 and 1873). There are also cases where the interval between a leap June is greater than 19 years but less than 38 years (such as between 1987 and 2017, 30 years apart, and between 2810 and 2837, 27 years apart).
The shortest interval between two leap Junes is eight years (such as 2017 and 2025), followed by an interval of 11 years (such as 2025 and 2036). The frequency of leap June is second only to leap May. Moreover, some years with a leap June are also the years with the latest dates for the Chinese Valentine's Day, the Ghost Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival.
