How dare I interfere in the state affairs of your State of Wu? Helu said, if it were not for you, I would have been inferior to others. Now I am fortunate to meet you, which has led to my current position. I was about to carry out my grand plans, why do you want to back out halfway? Is it because my own Wu State is not useful enough? Wu Zixu replied, "It is not that I think Your Majesty is not capable of using your talents, but I have heard that 'distant relatives should not interfere with close ones, and distant relatives should not interfere with nearby ones.' How dare I, as a guest, place myself above the counselors of Wu?" Moreover, my great revenge has not yet been taken, and I am unable to plan my own small affairs, so how can I plan for national affairs? Helü understood and said: There is no better counselor than you in Wu State, so don't refuse anymore. Wait until the state affairs are settled, and I will avenge you. Then, you can do whatever you want. Only then did Wu Zixu make a long-term plan for King Helu of Wu. The first step is to build the capital. The capital of a country cannot be like a big market. A king must have his own capital. "Anyone who wishes to rise to power and become a king, must first build city walls, set up defenses, fill granaries, and manage military stores. This is the technique." King Helu of Wu said, "Okay, I will entrust you with the task of building the capital." In 514 BC, Wu Zixu, under the order of the King of Wu, built the capital city of Helu. The former capital of the Wu State was Meili. The city was relatively small, with a circumference of only 303 steps, probably not as big as a school playground today. The king worked in his own yard. Once a powerful enemy invaded, they would immediately abandon the capital, hide in the woods and wait and come out only after the enemy left. As the Wu State grew stronger, it gradually deviated from its original way of life, and this tactic was no longer applicable. Therefore, it had to build a large city to station troops and store grain in order to preserve its great cause for eternity. Geographically, the State of Wu was located in the southeast, very remote. To the north was the State of Qi, to the south was the State of Yue, to the west was the State of Chu, and to the east was the sea. It was surrounded by enemies on three sides and on one side was the sea. If the enemy attacked, it would be absolutely impossible to defend it without a strong castle. Therefore, a big city must not only be big, but also easy to defend and unbreakable. In terms of architectural Feng Shui, the ancients emphasized, first, practicality and adapting to local conditions; second, grandeur and the ability to awe people; and third, auspiciousness in order to bring good luck. Wu Zixu invited many people who understood astronomy and geography to check the height of the terrain and taste the saltiness of the water, the so-called "looking at the soil and tasting the water, imitating the sky and following the earth." After he favored the feng shui, he circled an area of more than 40 miles in the northeast of Gusu Mountain, recruited tens of thousands of workers, selected an auspicious day, and started construction.
