What Buddhist etiquette should we pay attention to when burning incense and praying for blessings?

1. Lighting candles:
1. Stand in front of the candlestick. If there is a candle on the stand, you can light it directly on the candle to continue the good karma. Recommended: Complete Collection of Buddhist Mantras
2. After the candle is lit, hold both hands upright and raise them up, silently reciting: "The light shines in all directions and dispels all darkness."
3. Insert the candle firmly into the candlestick. It is worth noting that you should try not to leave wax, matchsticks, paper and other debris on the ground. If you can light a lamp in the hall of the temple, such as an ever-burning lamp, it will be the most auspicious, and the light will last long, which is incomparable to candles.
2. Offering incense (holding incense, only three sticks are used as an example):
1. Burning long incense
1. Light the incense (you can light it over a candle, be frugal with matches, and be thrifty in everything you do, as the saying goes, be thrifty in the details and give generously), but extinguish the flame. Then, hold the incense stick between the middle and index fingers of both hands, and hold the end of the incense with your thumbs.
2. Place the incense in front of your chest, raise it to your eyebrows, and recite silently: "First, pay homage to all Buddhas; second, praise the Tathagata; third, make extensive offerings; fourth, repent of sins; fifth, rejoice in merits; sixth, request the Dharma to be turned; seventh, request the Buddha to stay in the world; eighth, always follow the Buddha's teachings; ninth, always be kind to all living beings; tenth, dedicate all merits to all."
3. Put your hands down naturally, place them in front of your chest, and start inserting incense. There are three ways to choose:
The first method: first insert the middle branch with your right hand, and silently recite: "Offering to the Buddha"; then insert the left branch with your left hand, and silently recite "Offering to the Dharma"; then insert the right branch with your right hand, and silently recite "Offering to the Sangha".
The second type: first go to the right, and silently recite “I vow to give up all evil”; then go to the left, and silently recite “I vow to cultivate all good”; then insert it in the middle, and silently recite “I vow to save all sentient beings”.
The third method: First, insert the right hand in the middle, silently recite "offering to the Three Treasures of the Ten Directions and Three Times", then insert the left hand, silently recite "offering to the parents and enemies of all past lives"; finally, insert the right hand, silently recite "offering to all sentient beings in the ten directions and three times".
4. Put your palms together and silently recite: "May this cloud of incense and flowers reach the Three Jewels, praying for great compassion and fulfilling the wishes of all living beings."
5. Bow on the spot. When worshiping the Buddha, you should bow down slowly and stand up slowly, one movement at a time, very clearly and naturally. Move slowly, easily and gently. Experience each movement and the feeling of the movement easily and slowly. Don't make the movements of worshiping the Buddha hurried or nervous. Otherwise, if you worship too quickly, you will feel panic, busy, anxious and chaotic, and lose your peace and tranquility.
When worshiping Buddha, place your forehead on the ground, keep your back straight, your body should be soft, and even the ground you touch should be soft and cool. After bowing down, use your heart to experience your two palms. After standing up, experience the movements and feelings of your hands and feet. Feel your experience, experience your feelings, feel every little part.
3. When entering the temple to worship Buddha, go in from the left and right sides of the door, with the left leg crossing the left side and the right leg crossing the right side. It is not appropriate to walk straight in the center, nor to walk in front of people who are worshipping. Hats, walking sticks, etc. must be carried by oneself or left outside the hall or in a side room. They must not be placed on the Buddhist table or altar. When worshiping, men should worship on the left and women on the right, depending on the Buddha statue. They should worship on the prayer mats on both sides in front of the Buddha (the prayer mat in the middle of the temple is for the presiding monk to worship and should not be touched).
Summary: Through the above article, we know that we can go to the temple to burn incense, worship Buddha and pray for blessings on the Spring Equinox, as well as the etiquette issues that need to be paid attention to when worshiping Buddha. I hope it will be helpful to friends in need. I wish you all good luck and peace in the new year!
