Introduction: With the continuous development of economy and the improvement of social level, the barter between people has gradually evolved into commodity circulation, and derived the existential relationship between producers, sellers and consumers. Consumers in the commodity circulation are the guarantee for the sustainable development of the entire economy. So what is Consumer Rights Day and is there any story behind it? Let’s follow the editor to find out. February is such a beautiful month, when everything comes back to life and welcomes spring. Let us have a deeper understanding of every detail of the second month of the lunar calendar. What is International Consumer Rights Day?March 15th of every year is World Consumer Rights Day, which was established by the International Consumers Union in 1983. Its purpose is to expand the publicity of consumer rights protection, make it receive attention worldwide, promote cooperation and exchanges between consumer organizations of various countries and regions, and better protect consumer rights on an international scale. What is the origin of International Consumer Rights Day?In the late 19th century and early 20th century, in order to safeguard their own rights and interests under unfavorable economic conditions, theories and movements for protecting consumer rights emerged, which ultimately led to the definition and confirmation of consumer rights in policies and laws.Consumer rights were formally proposed in the 1960s. On March 15, 1962, former US President John Kennedy delivered a special presidential message on protecting consumer interests to the U.S. Congress, in which he first proposed the famous "four rights" of consumers, namely: the right to security; the right to correct information; the right to make free decisions and choices; and the right to express consumer opinions. Kennedy proposed these four rights, which were gradually recognized by consumer organizations around the world and became the most basic work goals. March 15th is designated as "International Consumer Rights Protection Day". President Nixon then further proposed consumers’ right to seek redress and listed it as the fifth basic right of consumers. Since then, these rights have gradually been recognized by the world, and many countries have supplemented and developed them according to their economic and cultural levels, such as adding the right to receive consumer education. In 1983, the International Consumers Union designated March 15th of each year as "International Consumer Rights Day." Choosing this day as "International Consumer Rights Day" is also to expand publicity and promote consumer protection activities on an international scale. As Ms. Parkin, President of the International Consumers Union, said: "The interaction of people, the exchange of products, the activities of technology and communication, etc., require us to think and act on a global scale. While this struggle continues every day, we choose one day every year to let all parties hear our voice for consumers and gain the spiritual motivation to work hard for future tasks." In 1985, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the "Guidelines for Consumer Protection", which put forward general principles for protecting a number of consumer rights and interests, which in essence put forward consumer rights; namely: protecting consumers' health and safety from harm; promoting and protecting consumers' economic interests; ensuring that consumers have adequate information; enabling consumers to make choices based on their personal wishes and needs; consumer education; providing effective consumer redress methods; and freedom to organize consumer groups or organizations. Since then, these rights have gradually been recognized by the world, and many countries have supplemented and developed them according to their economic and cultural levels, such as adding the right to receive consumer education. Since 1983, consumer organizations around the world have held large-scale activities on March 15th every year to promote consumer rights and demonstrate the great power of consumers. These include issuing press releases; informing the public about the activities of consumer organizations; telling people what consumer organizations will do to protect consumer rights; conducting radio and television publicity, distributing publicity materials or consumer publications in schools; organizing speeches on consumer rights and working to raise awareness among general consumers. On this day, consumer organizations in some countries solicit "consumer rights songs" from the public, some organize speech contests or conduct assessment activities for "the most serious incidents of damage to consumer interests in the year"; reward people who have contributed to the consumer movement; hold exhibitions; and hold consumer education lectures. Consumer organizations in some countries also conduct inspections on the implementation of laws and regulations on protecting consumer rights. Since 1987, every March 15th in my country, the China Consumers Association and local associations at all levels have joined hands with relevant departments to organize large-scale publicity activities. Use various methods to introduce consumer knowledge and legal knowledge to consumers and publicize consumer rights. To awaken consumers' awareness of self-protection; to urge enterprises to pay attention to consumers' rights and interests; and to promote the whole society to care about and support consumer protection work. The publicity campaign for "March 15 International Consumer Rights Day" has become a social activity with far-reaching significance and broad social impact. Summary: Through the above article, we know the meaning and origin of Consumer Rights Day. We hope that everyone will have a deeper understanding of this and enhance everyone’s awareness of rights protection. I hope you like the above content! |
