Brief introduction to the "February 7th" prayer day of the Eshan Yi people

The Yi people in Juntun Town, Eshan Yi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, hold a festival on the seventh day of the second lunar month every year to pray to the gods to protect all the baby boys and girls in the town from illness and pain. The festival is referred to as "February 7th". This festival originated in the late Ming Dynasty. Before the festival every year, people would make three sedan chairs in preparation for welcoming the gods. Two of them had sedan chair roofs, and one was a chair. The one with the roof carried the Virgin Mary and the Earth God, while the one with the chair carried the God of Wealth.

The customs and contents of the "February 7th" festival of the Shan Yi people

On the evening of the sixth day of the second lunar month, an old man would go to the Holy Mother Hall and take down the three small statues from their seats and place them on the altar in the main hall. This was called "warming up the life". On the morning of the seventh day, all the children born in Juntun Town that year must wear clean festive attire, be held by their parents, carry a paper-pasted bamboo "yoke" with two small flags on their shoulders, and hold a pair of cock and hen, and go to the Bodhisattva's seat to receive their birth. When a baby is born, the small flag on the yoke is first removed and let the child hold it. Then the yoke is burned, and the parents take the child and the chicken home. After returning home, they killed and cooked the chicken, put it on a plate and went to the Temple of Our Lady to fulfill their vow. After people have fulfilled their wishes, they begin to welcome the gods. Juntun Town is divided into four sections: upper section, middle section, lower section and street section. When welcoming the gods, these four sections take turns to be the head in order. The leader has to slaughter pigs and sheep, prepare a banquet, and draw up a list of "elderly people who carry the incense."
According to the rules, all men who are fifty years old or above are eligible to eat fragrant meals (that is, attend banquets). When it is time to welcome the gods, the old men carrying incense walk in front, each holding two lit incense sticks in their hands, followed by the sedan chair and various lanterns that sing as they walk. The sedan bearers must be men who got married that year and must be dressed neatly in long gowns and jackets. If there are not enough people, they can be replaced by people who got married in the previous year.
