What are the taboos of the Lantern Festival? Pay attention to the following when eating Yuanxiao for your baby!
Introduction: The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China, and Yuanxiao is the most traditional food of the Lantern Festival. Almost every household will cook and eat Yuanxiao during the Lantern Festival. However, there are some specific groups of people who cannot eat Yuanxiao. There are also some etiquette and taboos in eating Yuanxiao. Please follow the editor to learn about the details! The first month of the lunar calendar is the beginning of spring, and there are beautiful festivals everywhere in this month. Mr. Shui Mo lists these traditional Chinese festivals and customs for you one by one.

What are the taboos of the Lantern Festival?

1. Eat less meat and oil on that day. The fillings of glutinous rice balls and Yuanxiao contain not only sugar, but also a considerable amount of solid fat. The traditional filling of glutinous rice balls in the south is made with lard. Salty glutinous rice balls are made with lard and meat, while sweet glutinous rice balls are made with lard and various nuts. Later, people developed products using butter, but its saturated fat content is even higher than that of lard. In recent years, people often use vegetable butter, which is a hydrogenated vegetable oil product, to replace butter and lard, but the health effects of this product are worse than those of lard and butter. About 1/3 to 1/2 of a large-stuffed glutinous rice dumpling is fat. Eating three dumplings is equivalent to using one plate of cooking oil. So, the second suggestion is that if you eat glutinous rice balls, you must eat less oil during the meal or on the same day. 2. It is difficult to digest if eaten after it has cooled down. Yuanxiao is slightly different from glutinous rice balls. Yuanxiao is made by rolling dry powder, has smaller filling and contains more powder. It is very solid after being cooked and easy to become hard inside. Tangyuan is made of wet glutinous rice flour that has been kneaded and boiled. It usually has a larger filling and is soft and delicate when cooked. Glutinous rice flour is sticky, so Yuanxiao is harder to digest than Tangyuan; but for people who have difficulty digesting fat, Tangyuan is more troublesome. So, the fourth suggestion is that it is best to eat glutinous rice balls hot. It is more difficult to digest when cold. When eating glutinous rice balls, you should eat them slowly and chew them carefully to avoid stomach upset. 3. Sugar-free does not mean low-calorie. Many diabetic patients are interested in sugar-free Yuanxiao, thinking that they can eat it with confidence as long as there is no sugar. Some people who are losing weight also choose sugar-free Yuanxiao. In fact, sugar-free does not mean low calories, nor does it mean low blood sugar response. Because the glutinous rice flour in Yuanxiao raises blood sugar very quickly, almost the same as white sugar. Even if no sugar is added, eating it is still not conducive to controlling blood sugar, so diabetic patients should be very careful. Besides, the absence of sugar does not mean less oil. So much saturated fatty acids, even trans fatty acids, are not good for controlling blood lipids and are not helpful for weight loss. So, the fifth suggestion is that if you are worried about the sugar and oil in them, just eat less and don’t be superstitious about sugar-free products.

Taboos for babies to eat Yuanxiao

1. Children's digestive function is weak, and their swallowing reflex has not yet fully developed. Even older children should not rush to eat the whole Yuanxiao. They should divide it into 1/3 to 1/2, and eat one bite before the second bite to prevent accidents. 2. Children with respiratory diseases should try to eat less Yuanxiao to prevent their condition from worsening. Babies under 3.3 years old are not suitable to eat Yuanxiao! Because glutinous rice is sticky, children under 1 year old are likely to have Yuanxiao stuck in their esophagus and block their respiratory tract. It is not easy for children aged 1 to 2 to chew the peanuts in the Yuanxiao filling.

People who cannot eat Yuanxiao

1. The elderly: The elderly often have decreased digestive function, tooth loss, and a slow swallowing reflex. Rapid swallowing may cause the Yuanxiao to get stuck in the throat, leading to breathing difficulties or even suffocation. Therefore, the elderly must chew the Yuanxiao slowly when eating it. 2. Patients with cardiovascular disease and hypertension should try to eat less of this kind of difficult-to-digest food. If they eat too much and are exposed to cold wind, these patients are prone to acute angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, etc. 3. People with poor gastrointestinal digestion function: Yuanxiao is made of glutinous rice flour, which is very sticky and difficult to digest. Eating it may cause stomach pain, bloating, belching, acid reflux and even diarrhea. 4. For patients with ulcers, eating Yuanxiao can increase the secretion of gastric acid, aggravate the irritation to the ulcer surface, and in severe cases can induce gastric bleeding, gastric perforation, etc. Summary: The above article introduces in detail the taboos of the Lantern Festival and some precautions when eating Lantern Festival Lanterns. It is recommended that everyone should pay attention to their health when eating Lantern Festival Lanterns!
