Experience the customs and traditions of the Lantern Festival in various parts of Zhejiang
Introduction: The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival of our Chinese people. For many Chinese people, the Lantern Festival is the most joyful and romantic festival. It is a "carnival" for children and the earliest "date day" for young people. Ladies who are waiting to be married can come out to enjoy the lanterns and take the opportunity to find their ideal husband. So, how do people in different parts of Zhejiang, my country celebrate the Lantern Festival? Let’s find out together! During the first month of the lunar calendar, you will have a good year. The first month is the most important month of spring. Mr. Shui Mo will share with you some knowledge about January.
Celebrating Lantern Festival on the 14th day of the first lunar month (Linhai)
Some places that once belonged to "Taizhou Prefecture", such as Linhai, still retain the tradition of celebrating the Lantern Festival on the 14th day of the first lunar month. The reporter interviewed Miss Xu, a native of Linhai. Miss Xu said that people in Linhai not only celebrate the Lantern Festival on the 14th day of the first lunar month, but also do not eat glutinous rice balls, but soup. Eat the salty soup first, then the sweet soup. The salty soup contains meat, bamboo shoots, dried tofu, frozen noodles, etc., while the sweet soup is a bit like "Eight Treasure Porridge", with longan, lotus seeds, kumquats, rice wine, etc., and sometimes some small dumplings. Why do we celebrate the Lantern Festival in advance? There are many legends passed down from generation to generation. Miss Xu said that there are several legends about celebrating the Lantern Festival in advance. The most widely circulated one is related to Qi Jiguang, a famous general who fought against Japanese pirates in the Ming Dynasty: When fighting against the Japanese pirates, it was originally planned to attack the Japanese pirates on the night of the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first lunar month, but the battle plan was accidentally leaked. In order to confuse the enemy, Qi Jiguang celebrated the Lantern Festival one day in advance, thus annihilating the invading Japanese pirates in one fell swoop. From then on, the Lantern Festival was changed to the 14th day of the first lunar month. Linhai moved the Lantern Festival forward by one day, while Hangzhou extended it by two days, extending the original lighting time from the 16th to the 18th. The reporter interviewed Ding Yunchuan, director of the Hangzhou History Society. Ding Yunchuan said that the old Hangzhou people have a saying, "Tangyuan when the lanterns are lit and rice cakes when the lanterns are turned off", which means that they eat rice dumplings when the lanterns are lit on the 13th day of the first lunar month, and eat rice cakes when the lanterns are turned off on the 18th day of the first lunar month. The Lantern Festival for Hangzhou people does not end until the 18th day of the first lunar month. The New Year is then over and it is time to get back to work for the new year.
We consider the festival as a festival only after we have eaten the "big glutinous rice balls" (Lanxi, Jinhua)
Our Lanxi glutinous rice balls are also different from traditional glutinous rice balls. The method of making these glutinous rice balls is very particular. Knead the flour into dough, put it in a basin, and mix the fillings. Take a piece of dough, press it with your thumb, rotate it, and roll it thin in the middle. Then put the filling into the rolled large glutinous rice ball skin. Only after eating the Lanxi-style glutinous rice balls can the Lantern Festival be considered complete.
My favorite is "Ban Tai Ge" (Wenzhou Yueqing)
During the Lantern Festival, there will be some unique folk performances in the small town where I grew up. The most famous one is called "Ban Tai Ge". The "Tiaoge" refers to a performance in which boys and girls dressed up as opera characters are placed on a special wooden frame. I loved watching it when I was a child and would look forward to the Lantern Festival after the Chinese New Year. Today, "Taige" has undergone changes. Performers have installed electric beads on the hats of boys and girls. The flickering lights in the night add to its charm.
