When is Yanjiu Festival?

Yanjiu Festival is the birthday of Qiu Chuji, the head of Quanzhen Taoism, the mainstream Taoist religion in the world and the religious leader in charge of Taoism in the world. According to Chinese folk customs, the 19th day of the first lunar month is the Yanjiu Festival. In the Ming Dynasty, Liu Dong and Yu Yizhen's "A Brief Account of the Scenery of the Imperial Capital·Baiyun Temple" recorded: "The immortal was named Chuji, with the courtesy name Tongmi. He was born on the 19th day of the first lunar month in the Wuchen year of the Jin Dynasty... Nowadays, people in the capital go to the temple on the 19th day of the first lunar month to have fun, ride horses and gamble. This is called the Yanjiu Festival. It is also called Yanqiu." It is also abbreviated as "Yanjiu".

Historical legends of Yanjiu Festival

The "Yanjiu Festival" does not only take place on the 19th day, but it starts from the first day of the first lunar month. On the eighth day, people worship the stars and the number of tourists starts to increase. In the Xijin Chronicle written by Xiong Mengxiang of the Yuan Dynasty, it is said that "from the first to the nineteenth day of the first lunar month, the people of the capital city call it the 'Yanjiu Festival'. All the men and women in the city drag bamboo branches and go to the Changchun Palace and Baiyun Temple in the south city. The palaces and temples perform rituals and burn incense, and indulge in feasting and entertainment, which is considered a grand festival."
On the nineteenth day of the first lunar month, Qiu Chuji's voice, appearance and smile seemed to appear before everyone again.
In "A Brief Account of Scenery in the Imperial Capital" written by Liu Dong and Yu Yizhen of the Ming Dynasty, it is recorded that on the 19th day of the first lunar month, "it is said that on this day, the immortal will surely come, and may transform into a gentleman, a wandering official or a prostitute, or a beggar. Therefore, tens or hundreds of feathered priests gather under the pine trees, hoping to meet him by chance." Anyone who is lucky enough to meet Changchun Zhenren on this day will be able to get rid of all diseases and prolong his life. Therefore, the emperor also sent his ministers to set up a banquet in Baiyun Temple and hold a grand sacrifice. On the 18th, pilgrims came from all directions to Baiyun Temple to burn incense and worship. Qiu Chuji's disciples built several simple sheds under the pine trees in the temple and practiced meditation and preaching. Some tourists simply hide in a secluded place in the temple, staying up all night, waiting for the right opportunity to meet Master Qiu.
On the 19th, there were crowds of tourists and traffic inside and outside Baiyun Temple, and the event reached its climax. As time goes by, the content of "Yanjiu Festival" is becoming more and more colorful, gradually forming a large temple fair. There are drama performances, martial arts acrobatics, famous snacks, handicraft exhibitions and sales, etc. The atmosphere of the temple fair is lively and the scale is grand.
In 1191 AD, Qiu Chuji returned east from Shaanxi and built the Lin Palace in Bindu Village, Qixia County, his hometown. He named it "Taixu", which means "Taixu Palace" by imperial decree. Local people also called it "Bindu Palace". On the day of "Yanjiu Festival", the temple fair at Baiyun Temple is as lively as the temple fair at Bindu Palace. The "Yanjiu Festival" in Qiu Zu's hometown and the temple fair at the Baiyun Temple in Beijing are closely connected and echo each other, jointly commemorating Qiu Chuji's birthday.
The temple fair at Bindu Palace is even more mythological. For example, the "Changchun Fairy Well", one of the eight major scenic spots in Qixia, was originally a well dug by Qiu Chuji and his disciples at the foot of Pingshan behind Bindu Palace in a year of severe drought in order to save the people fighting drought. The well water is indeed clear and sweet, and local people and passers-by are willing to drink it. Later it was said that this well was a fairy well, namely the "Changchun Fairy Well" and drinking the water from this well could cure diseases and prolong life. Therefore, every "Yanjiu Festival" comes, people who come to draw water from the fairy well would crowd around it, and from morning till night, there is an endless stream of people drawing water.
In front of the gate of Bindu Palace, there is a pair of large stone lions on both sides. Visitors stop here to watch, which is eye-catching. On the day of "Yanjiu Festival", children are brought by their parents from dozens of miles away to touch the lions, which will ensure that they are well raised and grow up to be successful.
