The 14th day of the first lunar month is the Lantern Festival

The traditional Lantern Festival is on the 15th day of the first lunar month, but in Taizhou, the festival is celebrated on the 14th day. This is especially true in the Linhai city area, which is a thousand-year-old prefecture and has the longest history. It is commonly known as the "Taizhou Prefecture 14th Night Lantern Festival."

Three legends about the Lantern Festival on the 14th day of the first lunar month

"The Theory of Filial Son" In the 14th year of Zhizheng in the Yuan Dynasty (1354), Fang Guozhen led the peasant army in eastern Zhejiang to attack Taizhou Prefecture, established a country and proclaimed himself king, built the Temple of Heaven on Beigushan Mountain, used the present Taizhou City God Temple as the Golden Palace, and issued an edict for all "heaven" to celebrate together, including traditional festivals. Fang Guozhen's mother was a Buddhist and she ate vegetarian food on the first and fifteenth days of each month (i.e. the first and fifteenth day of each month). The Lantern Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival every year happened to be the days when Fang's mother ate vegetarian food. Fang Guozhen was a filial son. In order to allow his mother to enjoy the Lantern Festival with "people all over the world", he issued an edict to celebrate the Lantern Festival one day in advance. Since then, it has become a custom in Taizhou to celebrate the Lantern Festival on the 14th day of the first lunar month. "War Theory" When Qi Jiguang was fighting against Japanese pirates in Taizhou, on the fourteenth day of the first lunar month of one year, Qi's army defeated a group of Japanese pirates on the seashore. The Japanese pirates fled to the interior. It was already late at night when Qi's army arrived. The people lit lamps to help them search for the remaining enemies. For a moment, every house in and outside the city was brightly lit. The Japanese pirates had nowhere to hide and were all wiped out. To commemorate this event, people moved the Lantern Festival to the fourteenth night of the first lunar month. "City Building Theory" According to the "Linhai County Annals of the Republic of China", the Lantern Festival on the 14th day of the first lunar month in Taizhou is closely related to the origin of fermented rice soup: "When the Tang Dynasty built the city, the weather was cold, so this was used to reward the soldiers, and thus the story became a reality." Folk legends are more detailed. At that time, General Yuchi Gong (some say it was Taizhou Governor Yuchi Liao) was ordered to build the Jiangnan Great Wall. The day the Great Wall was completed happened to be the fourteenth day of the first lunar month. In order to celebrate this "festival", people in Taizhou brought rice, taro, vermicelli, mustard greens and other foods from their homes to the military camp to reward the soldiers. However, due to the cold weather, the foods were cold when they arrived at the army. Everyone felt bad, and in order to let every soldier have a taste of their own dishes, they poured all the foods together and cooked them into a "big pot soup", which later evolved into fermented soup. That night, people lit lanterns all night to celebrate. From then on, Taizhou formed the custom of lighting lanterns all night on the 14th day of the first lunar month every year.
