Is the Winter Solstice a festival?

The Winter Solstice is one of the 24 solar terms and is also a traditional folk festival in my country. It is said that "the Winter Solstice is as important as New Year's Day."
Winter Solstice is the starting point of the sun's return. From the Winter Solstice, the sun's altitude rises and the daytime gets longer day by day. The Winter Solstice marks the rebirth of the sun and the beginning of a new cycle of the sun's return movement. Therefore, the ancients regarded the Winter Solstice as a "lucky day". Among the eight festivals of the year, the Winter Solstice is as important as the Beginning of Spring. In southern China, there is a custom of worshiping ancestors and feasting during the winter solstice. In northern China, there is a custom of eating dumplings on the winter solstice every year.
The Winter Solstice Festival has always been attached great importance to by the people. During the pre-Qin period, customs and cultures varied from north to south, and local customs had not yet been integrated and popularized. Many festivals had a history but lacked records. Many ancient festivals and customs are rarely recorded in written works. According to existing works, the Zhou people (in the Shaanxi area) regarded the eleventh month of winter as the first month and the first day of the eleventh month as the beginning of the year. The Zhou people's winter solstice on the first day of the eleventh month is the same as the winter solstice of the current "Twenty-Four Solar Terms" in the eleventh lunar month. Therefore, it is said that the Zhou people have been holding sacrificial activities on the winter solstice (November) since the Zhou period.

Should we eat tangyuan or dumplings during the winter solstice?

The food customs during the Winter Solstice are different in the South and the North. People in the south eat tangyuan during the winter solstice, while people in the north eat dumplings.
1. Eating Tangyuan in the South
Eating glutinous rice balls during the winter solstice is a traditional custom in southern my country. As the saying goes, "Every family makes glutinous rice balls, knowing that it will be the winter solstice tomorrow."
The custom of eating glutinous rice balls on the winter solstice has existed since the Ming and Qing dynasties. There are also official records of this in historical materials, which state that "on the winter solstice, glutinous rice is made into balls called 'tangyuan'." After making the dumplings, people offer sacrifices to gods and ancestors, and then the whole family gathers together to eat the dumplings, which is called "Tian Sui". Therefore, eating glutinous rice balls during the winter solstice is an ancient custom.
The winter solstice is the longest night of the year. On that day, before dawn, women get up, light a fire and cook glutinous rice balls, first to pay homage to the heavens and ancestors, and then the whole family sits around to eat the dumplings. Therefore, eating glutinous rice balls during the winter solstice not only represents the gradual return of the sun (sunshine), but also represents reunion. Modern people prefer to regard it as a symbol of perfection.
2. Eating dumplings in the north
In northern China, there is a custom of eating dumplings during the winter solstice, and there is also a saying that goes "If you don't eat dumplings during the winter solstice, your ears will freeze off and no one will care."
It is said that dumplings have existed as early as the Three Kingdoms period, but the dumplings at that time were similar to today's wontons. After being cooked, they were served in a bowl and eaten together with soup, so people at that time called dumplings "wontons." It was not until the Tang Dynasty that dumplings became what they are today.
The origin of eating dumplings during the Winter Solstice can be traced back to the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. Originally named "Jiao'er", it is said that it was first invented by Zhang Zhongjing, the medical saint of my country. Legend has it that eating dumplings during the Winter Solstice originated from Zhang Zhongjing, the medical saint of the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is said that in winter, Zhang Zhongjing saw that people's ears were damaged by the cold, so he wrapped cold-resistant medicines in dough into ear-shaped objects, named "Jiao'er", and cooked them on the Winter Solstice for people to eat with the soup to protect their ears.
To this day, people still continue the custom of making dumplings. Every winter solstice, people imitate Zhang Zhongjing in making "jiao'er" and cooking it with hot soup. Over time, it became a custom, and "jiao'er" evolved into local names such as "dumplings", "flatbreads", "water dumplings", and "water dim sum". The custom of eating dumplings on the Winter Solstice has been passed down from generation to generation.
